Could have come via Cyprus - a lot of the military out there bring cars back with them when they return to the UK.

It was bought by my wife whilst I was in Hospital.0

What's the CO2 figure on the V5C? £165 is band E, 131-140g.
£30 would be C, 111-120g.

Optional extras (anything that adds rolling resistance like bigger wheels, anything that affects aerodynamics like roof rails, anything that adds weight like a panoramic roof) can make a difference to the figure for an individual vehicle compared to a generic number given for that model. The figure on the V5C is the exact figure for your individual car, according to the manufacturer.
If it was a non-EU import without a certificate of compliance and an official CO2 figure, it'd be on the pre-2001 bands - £180 under 1550cc, £295 above - so we can rule that possibility out.
Without more details we'll never know but not sure you can revert back to standard wheels etc to reduce the CO2 banding

That's the exact model, it's an import I from Japan. Bought it from a dealer and some of the paperwork was in Japanese.
It won't be to European spec, so VW won't issue a Certificate of Conformity for your VIN, so it won't have an official CO2 figure on the V5C. It'll have needed an IVA or SVA test to be UK registered, and that doesn't calculate the exact CO2 for it.
So the dealer told me fibs when he said I just need to inform the DVLA.0 -
Yes - but that's what car dealers do
So the dealer told me fibs when he said I just need to inform the DVLA.
Which then raises the point of do you want to keep it (and the subsequent risk when you come to sell it) or do you want to return it - in which case is there anything in the ad that mis-represented it as £30 VED1 -

I'm not sure what "stinks".
You know it was imported from a long way outside Europe.
Nobody's modified it and put in a different engine. It has the same engine it left the factory with...
Because it's not to European spec, it doesn't have an official CO2 figure so it can't be taxed on it. It's not as simple as "All 2015 1.2TSI 105PS Golf Estates are 117g so £30 tax". If it did have, then DVLA would have taken that from the certificate of compliance or foreign paperwork when it was imported and registered here, and it would be £30 or £135 or whatever.
