Tesco Mobile is to start charging new and recently joining pay-monthly customers to use their mobiles in Europe from May. The change means you'll have to pay to use your mobile data in 48 European countries and destinations – but you'll still be able to use your included calls and texts at no extra cost.

Plenty of providers still offer EU roaming as part of the deal (including O2 who are the network provider for Tesco mobile and Giffgaff).

Yes, but this list is going to get smaller and smaller as time goes on and once charges are introduced they'll never reverse it unless mandated to.

Also, there will come a point when any smaller provider who offers this will get lots of customers who join just for the free roaming on a second sim which will be loss making so they'll remove the perk.

But the majority don’t, and that’s despite all the Brexit assurances.

An interesting question to pose Brexit supporters is this: name just three tangible, quantifiable benefits.

It’s impossible to answer without descending into meaningless waffle and/or lies.

As ML points out in his article on the subject - the main UK suppliers all promised not to introduce EU roaming charges.

Blame Ofcom - for not holding them to it - as with other regulators - pretty useless.

That's an odd way of looking at it - when the sole cause of their doing it was Brexit. Had it not been for Brexit they'd have been braking the law to do it, and it simply wouldn't have happened.

Don't blame the Boomers - it wasn't just age that was the deciding factor in how people voted.  It was largely education and intelligence, and it's a shame more young people didn't get out there and vote Remain. I'll grant you that Express and Mail readers are largely older, and they believed the lies in those papers, but again that was more down to lack of intelligence than anything else.

I do sometimes think some perspective is needed - rather than the tired old diatribes against boomers or northerners or people without worthless degrees. Like it or not we have left - so the advice on here should focus on the matter in hand (saving money and getting the best deal).

I recently spent 7 days in the EU - the cost of my roaming with my provider (three) cost me less than my ryanair seat reservations. If you can afford a holiday in the current climate - you can afford £2 a day to use your phone! Three UK also allow me to use my UK data/calls package in 20 other non EU nations (from the US to Singapore to Australia) for a small daily fixed fee - their sister company three in Ireland (in the EU) do not allow roaming outside the EU without paying huge charges per call or per MB. So its not always rosier on the other side!

Tesco is of course keeping free calls and texts in the EU - which is what most people use their phones for (to call/text friends and family). If you need data - find somewhere with wifi like your hotel or a cafe - its not hard.

Or just as has been said switch providers to those still offering free EU roaming - like o2/Virgin and others. If £2 a day on your hols is such a big deal - less than the price of a coffee - then it only takes a few minutes to switch. O2 also give you free Greggs coffees/sausage rolls and odeon tickets and more - so do your comparison!

Millions of Brits of course won't be able to have a holiday at all this year - some can barely afford to feed their family and heat their homes. So again - some perspective is needed from those who can afford to go on multiple holidays!

Vodafone also offer 8 or 15 consecutive day roaming in EU - that brings charges down to £1 / day. 

Covering most peoples holiday needs.

And have no plan to spend enough time in EU to lose on the deal - either at £2 or £1 - having paid less than before - without roaming.
