Common tactic. As long as they update their records now you've contacted them, you're golden.0

If there is an email address on the letter I would contact them and tell them that the addressee doesn’t live there and has never lived there. Failing that, I would phone them and give them that information.
That way you know they definitely have the information. Otherwise you risk getting more letters or even bailiffs turn up at some stage
It may be tht it is your ex using the address intentionally, in which case, tell them ex doesn't live there and given them any info you have about where he does live.
Equally, it may be that he didn't give it to them and that the debt co has tried to trace him and found the wrong person, in which case calling them to let them know he doesn't and hs never lived there is still sensible, but it's up to you if you also want to tell them where he really is!
You and your son if he is an adult, may also want to check your credit records and consider adding a notice of disassociation to make clear you are no longer linked / that he is not part of your household. I am not sure if it is possible to add a specific note that he has no connection to your address.
On the plus side, his debt should not affect your credit records even if he has misused your address, as those records are based on names, not addresses, and in the unlikely evet of bailiffs showing up then providing a copy of your council tax bill to chow he is not an occupant of the property would be sufficient (and you don't have to let them in, unless they have a warrant - always step outside and close the door to speak to them)All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)1
