Ex using my address

Recieved a letter today, my son opened it as his initial is the same as his father's. It was for the ex, from a debt recovery company.
Ex has never lived at this address, this home is mine and my husbands, moved here 2 years ago.
My adult son lives with us and rarely gets post, so was surprised and disappointed in the same minute when opening 'his' letter!
Letter says "We appreciate your assistance and ask that you call us".
What would you do?

Put it back in the post box with 'not known at the address given' written on it.#2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £3660

If it was me I wouldn’t put it back in the post as I wouldn’t trust the post office to return it or trust the debt recovery company to acknowledge that it had been returned. If there is an email address on the letter I would contact them and tell them that the addressee doesn’t live there and has never lived there. Failing that, I would phone them and give them that information.
That way you know they definitely have the information. Otherwise you risk getting more letters or even bailiffs turn up at some stage6 -
I would be inclined to go with serpico100's suggestion, but write to them rather than call. You should keep a copy of the letter and get a proof of posting from the Post Office so you can show that they were sent the information. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.1

Is it possible that the debt recovery company *thinks* it has found your ex with your son having the same initial and surname rather than your ex is using your address? I think I'd contact them rather than posting it back return to sender. We advised our adult son to return post for the previous tenant, who had a lot of debt. The letters kept coming so DS ignored us, contacted the comapnies themselves, had proof that he now lived there and the companies have changed their records. Son has rang up, but whatever method suits you best.6

You just need to call the debt recovery company. People make mistakes but you can resolve this easily with a call.0

From what you saw, was there anything in the letter to be clear it was your ex and not your son who had the debt?1 -
You can let your adult son call back. Simple greeting, that all.0

The letter inside envelope named ex's full name.My son works full time, and only has a sim contract to his name, no debt and plenty of savings.I'll email company with the ref number in the letter and explain.
Thank you all for advice x:cool:If you want to do something, you will find a way.If you don't, then you will find an excuse...:cool:0 -
Ah.... so phone call to company revealed they used electoral register to find a Mr A Person, and that name was connected to our address (my son). The ex isn't on ER so they sent letter here to hopefully find correct person.:cool:If you want to do something, you will find a way.If you don't, then you will find an excuse...:cool:5
