Money Moral Dilemma: Should I use the birthday present I got my friend?

  • I would check if the voucher can be extended - most allow this.  I would then message the friend saying you had received notification that the voucher is about to expire and ask if they want you to extend it?  If they say yes, then extend it for them.  If they say no then say you will use it up as they are away....

A conversation would be the best way forward. Other than that send an email saying the voucher is about to expire, would she be happy for you to use it. Could always buy a gift from the gift shop for her while there if you feel it is appropriate. Or just write it off and learn from the experience..
  • As most people suggest, remind the friend the voucher is expiring soon, and suggest you’d be happy to use it if they can’t.
  • It would be a shame to waste it so I agree with other comments, to check with your friend before going ahead, if she agrees and you can afford it maybe offer something else she would like.

If you can get in touch while she's away, point out you've been reminded of the expiry and ask her whether it's going to  be used.  If not, would she mind if you used it.  She may have plans for it.
  • These experience vouchers with short dates are a pain and quite a lot of consumer money is wasted.
Even the most organised person can forget, especially if the gift is wholly virtual and sits hidden in an email list.
I don’t think the Uk has a law on expiry dates, like Ireland does (5yrs).
Does anyone know why the Uk is different? An expiry date based on the statute of limitation dates doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.

I think a lot of companies make money out of unused vouchers.  A National Trust one we were given expired during the pandemic when everything was shut down!  We had had it for a while without using it even before the pandemic.

Is the statue of limitation to do with how long has passed if a crime has taken place that you can be charged for it? If so England/Wales thankfully doesn't have that either. Committed a crime 50 years ago and not caught till now. You can still be charged and go to prison. Too many times I've heard of crimes in other countries  when the culprit got away with it, because too much time had passed for a prosecution.

To me I'd just contact the friend and ask if they or anyone else will be using it before the expiry date, and if not say mind if I use it then and offer to get them a different resent next time they're back.

  • I win would send her a message to let her know it’s expiring and suggest you get another voucher for her when she’s back and ask if she minds you using it in the meantime so it’s not lost it’s a win win 😊
