just to update, i phoned royal mail again and submitted my 2 claims for delayed special delivery items over the phone without having to send the SD form or a claim form in.

How did you manage to do that?

I posted an item SD on Monday. It was not delivered yesterday and they only attempted delivery today (informed by the recipient, not by RM). When I spoke to RM today, to find out where the parcel was, they tried to tell me it was sitting in the recipient's PO Box. When I said he did not have one, I was told it was probably sitting in the Delivery Office Box.

Anyway, I asked if the claim could be done over the phone and was told no. The guy offered to send me a claim form or said I could download one over the internet.

I want to do it over the phone, but do I have to wait until the item is actually delivered. Also, do I just get back the £6 I paid for SD, or they pay out additional compensation?

Is it likely for special delivery items will arrive within the guaranteed time if sent today?

should be.bear in mind this is an unusual amount of sd items and a plane failing causing massive issues.
the whole system works to a timescale and 1000's of SD items being late causes huge issues.

oh yes and lets not go in ranting at the delivery office staff.
if sd's are late its usually because they dont make it to the delivery office in time :)
