Using a top sheet negates the whole purpose of the duvet- it's supposed to wrap around you trapping the air to make you warm. if you have a sheet under the duvet you might as well have an eiderdown because now the duvet is laying on the top rather than cocooning you.
if you take the top sheet away you should find the duvet warmer- you are of course also adding extra weight with the sheet. In the case of a duvet weight does not equal warmth. Probably the warmest duvets are goose down- so light in weight, with down that shifts in the channelling.
I was pointing out that as I have put in bold- weight does not equate with warmth, the reason being by adding more weight you are squashing out all the pockets of air. The reason folk are advised to wear several thin layers of clothes is so that air is trapped between the layers rather than a heavy thick piece of clothing.

In this instance I would firstly get rid of the sheet and ensure that all the duvet is resting on the mattress- not hanging down over the sides because that's also getting rid of the air pockets too. Try that first because you might be warm enough. A lightweight fleecy blanket would be the next thing to add.
Quilted bedspread- will just add to the weight. Keep on the settee!

I used to have just a duvet ( feather & down) when there were lacy ice patterns on the inside of the windows....

  • Agreed, on top of the duvet.

I keep reading about people putting stuff under the bottom sheet (a fleecy blanket or a summer duvet etc). Apparently it keeps you warmer than putting more on top of yourself. That doesn't make sense to me so I've never tried it.

I think this is from when beds were all metal springs, the duvet under the bottom sheets stops the cold from the springs. I don’t know if that’s right but I can see sense in it.
  • I would put the bed spread on top of the duvet.

We all have different preferences so I'd suggest the OP tries both options and see which one works for her.
Be kind to others and to yourself too.

I get overheated at night time sometimes, being another of the certain age. We have a lightweight duvet and a summerweight one below it. I spend my time moving between lying on top of the summerweight but under the lightweight, of under both along with OH. It is quite cosy lying on top of the summerweight duvet.

  • Is being sandwiched between them good for warmth @slinky? Or is it more of a soft and comfortable thing?

I like being warm in bed, so I am going to try it.

I don't get his 4 tog business, I sleep under 2x15 tog duvets after carefully wrapping myself up in 2 blankets. The mummified approach to warmth suits me well.

I do it to keep cool when I'm having a hot flush! Sometimes I'm warm enough with only the lower one covering me so I chuck the other one back over OH, then I get cold and drag it back. Sometimes I need both over me. Others I just need the top one so lie on top of the lower one, as OH needs both.

If you suffer with cold and had a spare duvet to lie on top of that would be too hot if you had it covering you, I think it may well keep you warmer.

  • I sometimes feel I’m warm enough to power the whole street - the only way I could have multiple duvets/blankets is if they’d be soaked and frozen first 🥵
