I've got a 4-season duvet on my bed, and when it's cold at night like the next few days are forecast to be, I generally throw a fleecy blanket over the top.

I've just been given a very nice quilted cotton bedspread and am curious whether this should go on the bed under or over the duvet....

ETA I always use a top sheet between me & the duvet cover.

A duvet cover would probably be easier to wash and dry than a quilted bedspread, so I’d put the bedspread on top.

Using a top sheet negates the whole purpose of the duvet- it's supposed to wrap around you trapping the air to make you warm. if you have a sheet under the duvet you might as well have an eiderdown because now the duvet is laying on the top rather than cocooning you.
if you take the top sheet away you should find the duvet warmer- you are of course also adding extra weight with the sheet. In the case of a duvet weight does not equal warmth. Probably the warmest duvets are goose down- so light in weight, with down that shifts in the channelling.

Completely agree with this; warmest duvet I've ever slept under is the goose down. Light in weight, and drapes itself around me so no cold spots around the neck and shoulders.

I have the benefit of a king sized bed & down/feather duvet to myself so it does wrap around me. The top sheet means I don't have to wash the duvet cover every week when I change the sheets.

However, the question was whether the quilted cotton bedspread ("quilt" in American bedding) goes over or under my duvet when the overnight temperatures drop, not "what's the warmest duvet".

I'm old and get cold easily, the best thing I ever bought for the bed is a Teddy duvet cover from Matalan. It is soooooooo snug and dries quick too after washing

I also like a top sheet. We dont have self serve launderettes so we have to take duvet and pillows to the laundry /dry cleaner which costs a fortune

Me and Mr L like different sleeping temps. I keep on the 4 tog duvet, he has extra layers - so for me id be putting the quilted bedspread over the top so I can throw my side clean off.  Also it will trap the air and warm you

We use a top sheet too.  I run hot at night (woman of a certain age!) and even in winter I've been known to chuck off the (4 tog all year round) duvet.  We have a quilted throw, folded on the foot of the bed, that himself can pull up if he feels cold.

    On top.
I have a duvet in a cover, I then have a quilted bedspread that goes over the top. It gets folded down at night so keeping our feet warmer.

It then goes over the plain coloured duvet in the morning. It also matches the curtains.

It would go on top of the duvet.
