Debt Free Me in 2!

Options
Hello everyone

Been lurking on these boards for quite a few years. I've loved following the inspirational debt free journeys and have learnt so much over the years. I've really enjoyed following some of the diaries - and feel sad when my favourite posters disappear - it's like losing a friend - how sad is that.

With lots of help from these boards and adopting a more frugal lifestyle I managed to pay off a whopping amount of debt including the mortgage and became finally debt free for the first time in 30+ years in 2018.

2019 I purchased a property for DS and have been overpaying that mortgage as much as I can but have incurred some debt as there was a lot of work to be done - damp, kitchen, windows, - the list still goes on.

Life has been incredibly stressful over the last 3 or so years. I'm now full time guardian of my DG and have a very unwell partner who is a massive hoarder. This has proved to be a huge problem in our relationship and has affected our quality of life as there is no compromise at all. I also work full time in a demanding but rewarding role. Sometimes I wonder where my life is !

So to the debts - I have a credit card debt of £1500, and an outstanding bill for electrical works of £950. I would love to retire in 2 years. My goal is to pay off the debts, finish the refurbishment of DS house [and mine] plus continue to overpay as much of the mortgage as i can in 22 months which is when the fixed term ends.

I want to make every day count and continue to take enjoyment out of every day and practice gratitude. A sense of humour also helps !

Lovely to meet you all !

A great attitude to have when life is tough. Sounds like you’ve really been through it in the last few years. Wishing you all the best paying off the remaining debt and with the mortgage 🙂

  • Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Have you looked into any support/charities in your area that may be able to help with the hoarding? I think it's wonderful you are paying the mortgage on property for your DS. Are they not in a position to help at all themselves?

  • Thank you for replying  - thank you for your lovely comments and support.

DS and the house. Him and his house mate do pay a nominal rent so that money goes towards mortgage and refurb . Mind you once you factor in tax and other landlord liabilities it doesn't cover a great deal but I am grateful for it. I am putting a lot of my income towards repairs and refurbishment. My mind set is that all of these repairs will hopefully only be done once 🤞 the house is very old but solid and it's so worth it knowing he will have a home for life.

Hoarding -  I do recognise it's a mental illness and possibly an addiction / compulsion.  It's extremely unfair on the people who live with the hoarder and no amount of effort on my part had led to any great changes. I'm met with refusals, excuses, indifference, ultimatums, and even aggression. We have 3 complete rooms full of stuff plus other areas of the house are full to burst. It's soul destroying but he refuses to see there is a problem at all.

On a positive note I went for a lovely walk yesterday with DG in between the downpours  and the sun actually peeped through the clouds for a bit. She splashed in all the puddles - lovely to watch.
  • Welcome to the diaries, is lovely to see you here. 🌟
Does your DG live with you? I take it they are not DS’s child? You are doing an amazing job holding everyone up and should be very proud.
Perhaps some kind of a charity intermediary may help with the hoarding, as the anger could be directed away from you? Are you able to sneak bits away?

  • Hello !
I have full guardianship and she's with me permanently. She has had a really rough start - her mum has casual contact. I'm determined to give her the best life I can and make sure she feels safe and loved. We all love her to bits. She makes me laugh every day.

Hoarding - my partner very poorly so I'm not rocking the boat at the moment plus I refuse to have drama in front of DG. Our confrontations always end in drama.

I am definitely sneaking stuff out though and have a target of 1item a day - big or small it all counts. I also want to practice the spiritual laws of the universe and what good deeds you do and help you give to others is rewarded - I will take good health please 🙏 got to stay well to raise the little chick 👶

MSE wise - I've cancelled TV licence and Netflix as I don't watch live TV and no longer use Netflix. It all helps.

Hope you all have a lovely day.

Hi ho hi ho it's off to work I go.

Hi Fab 50, your life sounds as hectic as mine

You are amazingly strong and try not to get too caught up over the hoarding, we had a house full and when it came to the crunch we condensed it down again and again, we now have only a 10ft storage unit left

  • Thanks Sue - that is so lovely for you to say that - and the other lovely comments, it's all very appreciated. I can't imagine ever being in that position but believe it will happen at some point. Would love to live in a little caravan by the sea, how great would that be...some day.

Busy day in work - looking forward to the weekend already 🫢

Need to work out my finances to budget for the electrician's bill - he is not booked in until the 11th Feb but need to be organised so I'm not stressing. Now for nice cup of tea.

Hoarding Wins ; ( need to find a better phrase ) put some unused vape juices on freecycle. Please somebody claim them - past expiry date so hope they are OK.
  • Update - Freecycle mods refused the post as they were past the use by date - so that's a fail. May pop the bag outside the house see if someone wants it.

Success - my DSis brought around 16 Disney books from book stand in Tes** for 50p - great condition - what a bargain.

Lots to be grateful for today - 🙏 lovely family friends and work bosses super supportive.

We're not to far from the sea, about 10 mins by car, love it. The "van" is not so little lol being a twin axle coachman.

Good for you trying to pass on recycle your stuff, we got so stuck for time we tipped most of our stuff, dreadful but taught me a valuable lesson, as I threw my worldly stuff into the containers it was like throwing money away, still makes me shudder now

  • Have had a busy and slightly productive few days. Building on my theme of making every day count I've disposed of an item a day that we don't use or is broken.

Vape juices gone last night and have put a cafetiere on Freecycle that I've never used.
I'm keeping a list of what is going as it makes me feel like I'm making progress.

Debtwise, I'm budgeting £100 off the cc a month as it's on interest free at the moment.

Mortgage: I owe £50635.34 as at Saturday 14th. I've got a mortgage neutral savings account. That interest is twice what my mortgage interest rate is so it makes sense to keep my money in there for the time being plus its accessible. I've got £3311.67 so mortgage is £47323.67. Makes me feel better being in the 40Ks.

Still havent worked out how to pay the electrician bill yet 🫣

Worked from home yesterday - had to open the door a few times to the Amazon man delivering yet more parcels! The house is filled with boxes - and more stuff we wont use - definitely an addiction 😬
