Start date for state pension

I just found out that it seems you have to wait until the saturday after your 66th birthday before the state pension is paid, so someone who turns 66 on a Sunday effectively loses out by a week. This seems very unfair in an age where data can be updated to the second. If this is right has nobody ever questioned this? On another note it seems that you lose any carer's allowance the minute you get the state pension -  am I right about this? Grateful for any replies.

No. Anybody in UK reaching 66 now is entitled to state pension. The increase to 67 is phased in from 2026 to 2028

Your State Pension age depends on when you were born. I will reach state pension age in a bit less than 66 in less than a year.
It will then rise from 66 to 67 by 2028, the rise will be phased in and will affect those born after 6th April 1960.

It will then rise from 67 to 68, timetable to be confirmed.
You can check your own pension age (under current rules) here

Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

You retain an 'underlying entitlement' to carer's Allowance which will increase entitlement to means tested premiums if applicable (Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction). However Carer's Allowance will not be paid alongside the Sate Pension because of 'overlapping benefit' rules.

Thanks for the comments guys but why should some people have to lose out on a week die to the vagaries of the system? If you owe money you have to pay it on the exact date. I bet the carer's allowance is stopped at midnight on the day before you turn 66.

Your first payment will usually be within five weeks of reaching State Pension age and will cover the period from when you reached State Pension age. You’ll usually get a full payment every four weeks after that.

You cannot get the full amount of both Carer’s Allowance and your State Pension at the same time.

If your pension is £69.70 a week or more, you will not get a Carer’s Allowance payment.

If your pension is less than £69.70 a week, you’ll get a Carer’s Allowance payment to make up the difference.

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • State pension can be paid any day Monday to Friday depending on your NI number - see here

Yes, you don't get pension between you birthday and the first payment date

Thans guys, but has anyone not raised the unfairness of the week's wait before? Does anyone know if the Carer's allowance cuts off bang on the birthday yet you might have to wait a week for the pension?

That’s strange. I have just looked at my pension forecast through the Government Gateway and it’s not due until 6 calendar months after my 66th birthday
If you were born September 1960 or thereabouts you are in the "phasing in" period for the rise from 66 to 67 - some people will be entitled to state pension at different ages between 66 and 67, see here:
