Thans guys, but has anyone not raised the unfairness of the week's wait before? Does anyone know if the Carer's allowance cuts off bang on the birthday yet you might have to wait a week for the pension?
State pension is paid in arrears, not in advance. As already said the first payment will be calculated from your birthday.

Carers allowance is also paid in arrears, if paid 4 weekly. If you get a weekly payment it is paid in advance.
So if you are paid weekly, it will stop on your birthday. If you are paid monthly then the final payment would be after your birthday I would think,

Well my wife was 66 in 2021, she got a small payment (1 day) on her actual birthday and then the first full 4 weeks payment 4 weeks later. So not sure where this Saturday deadline has come from.

Just to make you aware they always quote 4 weekly but you can request weekly or fortnightly

Just looked at the pensions website  and just checked with SAGA and looks again like you only get paid starting on the pensions "Payday" which is a Saturday. So if your birthday fall on a Saturday fine, if it is a Sunday you lose a week. Seems very unfair.
  • Not sure where you are getting the Saturday payday from? SAGA agrees with the info I posted above - state pension payday is either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on your NI number

The new state pension is paid in arrears from the day you reach state pension age.  I got mine from my pension due date, a payment of 3 weeks and 3 days worth was made 24 days after my pension start date. MrsM received 1 week and 5 days worth 12 days after her birthday. Payment day depends on your NI number.  Pre 2016 pensioners are  paid differently.but unlike the new pension it does not stop at the date of death

Thanks guys, I guess I was getting confused. The Saga website says that "if you reach pension age  on a Monday you won't get your pension until the following week because the state pension begins on a "payday". It seems from you guys that it does backdate to day one.

I think it's all too easy to confuse where the word 'paid' is being used. Your state pension entitlement will start from the day you reach state pension age, but will be paid at a slightly later date - but it will include backdating to the day when your reach SPA.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
