I understand your upset, good luck.

My seller told me she was 'gifting' me the contents of her shed as she was moving to a flat without a garden.

I've been here two years in March, and have only just found out she didn't tell me she was also 'gifting' me a loft full of rubbish.

I'm having a positive ventilation unit put in the loft, and the electrician has very kindly arranged for his friend to come and help clear it.  I'm fairly strong but wobbly up ladders, not sure I'd be able to take the weight of a 1960's radiogram/big watertank etc  with one arm while hanging onto the ladder.  The council charge £18 per item, I hope I will be able to take it all to the dump.

1960s stuff like a radiogram are fast becoming collectable or can be re-purposed. Don't dump it without checking if it is worth something

You may have a claim, but the effort in gathering evidence, raising a court claim, recovering the money etc may not be worth it as you don't get paid for the time. On the emotional / principle side, I think it depends on the person.. if you can put it out of mind and move on then great, but for some it might nag at you for longer than if you followed up. I'd suggest take some dated pictures but then leave it a week, ignore the shed if you don't need to use it. If its still bothering you then do the below.

    - Send a friendly letter / email stating that they have left the items / rubbish behind and asking them to collect or dispose within 7 days. If they won't be doing that then they should let you know and you'll dispose and send them the bill.
    - If they don't cooperate, then send a letter before action asking to be reimbursed for the cost to dispose and cost of the additional movers costs due to the additional wait beyond 12pm.
    - If they don't pay up, then dispose of the items, keeping receipts and file a money claim online  for the above amount and court filing costs. Provide your invoice from the movers detailing the cost for the extra hours, as well as receipts from the disposal.
    - If the court gives you a money judgement, then wait for this to be paid or if not they'll get a CCJ.
    - If they bought a new property, you may be able to secure the judgement against that, ie they'll have to pay you in order to sell. However note this may be a loooong wait.
  • Obviously something wrong with me, I spent hundreds of pounds fixing lots of small jobs on the house I was selling (items that the buyer was not aware of).   The week before exchange doing a massive deep clear so house would be spotless for the couple moving in.  Even did all the lawns and gardens the day before exchange.

Is it just me that wants the people moving in to be as happy as possible?
  • Ditto chemistry777. I left my house in great working order, no wee jobs, spotlessly cleaned.

The house we moved into was….. not.

OMG!  Did you buy our house??

No I know you didn't as we moved 5 years back but I spent weeks packing up our place and MiL's.  On the day we moved out of ours prior to going to a hotel for a few days before MiL's move I ran around the place hoovering wildly to try to rid the place of cobwebs and debris that had been hidden behind heavy furniture.  I did the same when MiL's move was finished and then collapsed for about a week.  I was practically embarrassed by the pristine state of the place we all moved in to.

    Hi
    You are not alone.
We've never had to "deep clean" as it has never been required but tbut ensure its left in a nice way

a place we moved into that looked nice but we knew

we were to total refurb had three layeys of carpet. I found this out the next day it was in the hallways - I removed all carpets around the house within a week. Before we total refurbed we always get the rood done if its over x yrs old - We had not bothered to go into the loft and the roofers told us re two skip loads of rubbish - to dirty, disgusting  pee soiled mattresses - how some people live - thanks to the roofer, great cahp he got everything out via roof and only charged us for the two skips - we worked and were busy people and a quick call to the clown solictor concluded in my decision to forget and move on

    Thanks
