I used to do the basket thing but now my mobility is getting worse, I now have a pretty hessian tote bag at the bottom of the stairs that has the large over-the-shoulder handles. means my hands are free, It's lighter than a basket and can still be on the top landing banister ready to come back down again.Siebrie said:@sammyjammy I can only suggest that, if stairs are a horror for you, you shouldn't clutter them with shoes and baskets! Find a system that works for you and keep you safe!today's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.

My secret trick for happiness will probably have you howling with laughter, but it's the simple things that count, esp those that make my life easier. Eg when washing dried outside - watching the line rotate in the breeze is strangely satisfying! - and the mopped floor drying in minutes because the sun is out is such a blessing. Realised only because both tasks were such a hassle for me previously. No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.19 -
My mother would give me a mug and scissors as a child. It was my job to remove the stalks from mint or parsley and cut the herb up. It's easier, sitting down and watching a video or reading and chomping away with scissors, than doing the chopping on a board with a big knife.JIL said:I cut pizza with scissors.
I also trim beans and cut cabbage stalks out using scissors.13 -
We had a half moon for that. Italian mother etc, we had a few gadjets that weren't run of the mill. Like the big spoon with holes in it [ 6 inches]for lifting out gnocchi, the grater that folded for parmesan, the salt and toothpick holder etc...I bought myself one of the latter from a charity place there when I went recently just to bring back good memories. My trick is use the stalks in whatever I'm cooking if using parsley or coriander, just as much flavour in the stalks as the leaves and the extra texture is nice.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi15

I sprayed Dettox mould remover on old gloss paint, by mistake. Didn't damage the paint and the dingy cream paint looked like brand new Brilliant White.
If you know anyone with horses, grab some vinyl or rubber gloves and ask to use their neatsfoot oil. It works wonders on old leather, however stiff.
Gather up any brass pieces in your house. Wearing plastic or rubber gloves, squirt cheap tomato ketchup over them. Make sure the piece is completely covered. Leave for 5 minutes minimum, then rinse off with water and dry with kitchen towel and it will look like new. No white or black residues in any engraving, either.18 -
Self closing door mechanism. We have three upstairs cats who constantly leave our bedroom door open. Good for ventilation but very cold. We fitted a self closing door mechanism. It’s just a spring with a rod. Hopefully the cats will get the hang of it and we will not be sleeping in a wind tunnel. For entertainment value I also attach the instructions.

Those instructions made me properly giggle Green_hopeful
"One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate change policy is environmental policy. Instead, climate change policy is about how we redistribute de facto the world's wealth." - Ottmar Edenhofer, IPCC economist, interviewed at COP167 -
