Royal Mail 'cyber incident' hits overseas post

  • Just to update this, in case anyone hasn't kept up with announcements. RM have started accepting international letters or large letters that don't require a customs label. Presumably they will join the large quantity of post that has piled up since the cyber attack. They say that they have started shifting the backlog of parcels though they haven't resolved the software issues, which suggests that they are using other organisations to carry tracked parcels and the online tracking probably won't be updated.
Hopefully we will be able to send international parcels again soon.

    New update

    ROYAL MAIL INTERNATIONAL EXPORT SERVICES

We have made further progress in exporting an increasing number of items to a growing number of international destinations. We are using alternative solutions and systems, which were not affected by the recent cyber incident.

Our focus has been on despatching the export parcels and letters which were in our network before the cyber incident. We have also been successfully despatching standard export letters since reinstating those services for customers on 18 January.

As a result of this progress and the growing capability of our alternative export solutions, we can now announce that we are resuming our International Tracked & Signed as well as International Signed services to all destinations for business account customers and customers buying postage online. This includes parcel, large letter, and letter formats of these services. Online shipping solutions are now enabled to allow customers to select these services, print labels and send items from Thursday 26 January.

Delivery of International Tracked & Signed and International Signed items posted from Thursday 26 January may take slightly longer than usual and customers may notice different tracking information as items leave the UK.

We continue to ask customers not to submit any new Tracked or Standard/Economy export parcels into our network just yet. We are aiming to provide further updates on these services in the coming days.

Import operations continue to perform a full service with some minor delays. Domestic services are unaffected.

Here is live info about a package I mailed to Belgium. A4 size 200g. Small birthday present.

Sent Jan 4th 2023 before the Cyber attack.

Arrived in Belgium January 10th, thus still before the Cyber attack.

Now it seems to be stuck.

Belgian tracking is saying this and has been saying it for several days.

Shipment arrived from outside EUTuesday 10-01-2023 | 17:23

    Waiting for customs clearance

     Delay parcels from United Kingdom

Due to IT problems at our partner in the United Kingdom, there are delays in the delivery of letters and parcels from the United Kingdom to Belgium. Our partner Royal Mail is working hard to solve the problem.

Are many of you still experiencing this issue?

    Many thanks.

Acouple of days ago I sent a parcel to NZ, paid online and printed label at home but the system insisted on pick up from my home. I left it in a safe place and it was collected as arranged, now waiting to see how long it takes, tracked not signed for.

    Hi
    Thnaks OP

Looks like I missed the story.

Sadly, a lot of our orgs are ill-prepared for cyber-attacks because of various reasons. Companies should remind staff of their obligations and not open emails that seem suspect.

Two of our children/adults work as top-flight cyber security experts and have to remind ceo's etc that no company is infallible from cyber attacks but they can utilise easily what they have to increase protection. Several co's in the uk often advertise for, head-hunt via specialist firms youngsters who are experts at hacking and get to test their fail-safe systems and disaster recovery processes. These experts re hacking are often based in other countries and worth their weight in gold.

    Thanks

That looks like Belgian delays.  The warning message really relates to parcels posted after yours.  Possibly they will receive a large quantity of parcels previously held up in the UK at some point which will not help.
Good luck - hope it arrives soon.

So after reading this, and having an outstanding parcel to the USA to be sent, i bought International Tracked postage online and took it down to my PO today to drop it off, and the clerk says they couldny accept it! She just held up a print off about the cyber incident (english isnt her first language) even though i said they were supposed to be accepting International Tracked if its online postage. Am I missing something?

Possibly. I would have thought as a PO they would be informed by head office or some such, not them having to check something every so often!
