VLC - dvd keeps stopping can't adjust file caching

Have addressed this to a VLC forum but thought I would try here too because your usually very helpful.

Am attempting to play dvds on an external dvd player plugged into a windows 11 laptop. The dvds do play but stop briefly after the first 2 mins and then about every 4 mins after that. have tried the following suggestions

https://www.videoconverterfactory.com/t ... 2%20button.

Except for the file caching increase - when I go to where it is on VLC its written in a list but there's no box with a value in it next to it. Tried adjusting threads - same issue there's no way to adjust it. If someone can suggest another way to resolve the stopping that would be great. I mention the file caching because usually that solves any problems I have with dvd playing. VLC version is Vetinari 3.0.18 and has been reinstalled. Have tried another dvd player - same problem. Windows up to date also.

With thanks.

Take the DVD unit to another computer.

If the issue continues its probably a problem with the device.
If it clears up the issue is with your laptop.

You should be able to edit the (many) preferences for VLC in the file named "vlcrc".
That file includes the parameter, which I ~think~ is the one you want:
    # File caching (ms) (integer)
    #file-caching=1000
It should be possible to edit this with any text editor, removing the # sign and then assigning a different value.
You would need to do some internet searching to find the location of that file in a Win11 install. On a typical Linux installation it's in the folder /<username>/.config/vlc but that probably doesn't help you much!

It's probably worth trying if @fwor's suggestion doesn't help but as the OP says "Have tried another dvd player - same problem." it seems more likely that it's either a computer or software problem.

Is the dvd powered from an external source or does it rely on your pc usb? Oh and have you got an antivirus program which may be interfering?

I've interpreted "DVD Player" as being another piece of software (ie the problem occurs with VLC and with <whatever else, PowerDVD or whatever) as its not clear whether they mean a player (as in the drive) or the the player as in the software.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. The other dvd player refers to hardware dvd player not other software. It is plugged into the laptop usb port. I have tried going to playback - title and selecting the main movie title and that seems to solve the problem - it plays fine with no stopping provided I'm quick. Thanks again.

To restart this, in hope someone would be kind to reply. Is VLC playing up again?

I only have one Dell laptop and one External Asus DVD player. I have been watching films up to only a fortnight ago. However VLC has had (it appears) six reprograms from the 3.0.12 i was using successfully. I put the film that i watched a fortnight ago and it now doesnt play. This suggests VLC 64bit is now not working? Any thoughts please?

I also like VLC but have you tried another media player to see if that solves the problem

the other option is to go to the old versions site and get the back level of VLC that you knew works, uninstall VLC from your laptop and then reinstall the old version and see if things work and confirm your suspicion.

Don't forget to turn off automatic updates

    Thanks KM1500

Yes, I have reverted. It didn't work. So I have wiped both versions, thinking a fresh day tomorrow and load the latest.
