Car hire pick up points - Airport or nearby local office?

We're looking to hire a couple of vehicles out of Brisbane at Easter and have found out that there is a substantial hike in price for collecting from the airport vs taking a short cab ride to an off-airport collection depot. Guess other contributors have had similar experiences?

Yes I have found that the case in many airport locations.

There can often be airport imposed facility fees which together with the costs of running an airport desk type operation will increase rental costs. I think you always need to look at the cost vs convenience off an airport pickup/drop off over one that is off-site.

On my recent trip, the "premium location surcharge" for collecting at Sydney airport was 33% (plus 10% GST ?).

Definitely worth looking at and weighing up the cost vs the benefit.

Car hire in Aus was pricey, as I'm sure you've discovered.

If you have just flown to Australia from the UK, you frankly do not want to be jumping into any car and driving. Get a rest and pick up the car from the city the following day, cheaper and safer.

If you have been travelling in the front of the plane, it's much less of an issue
