Plasterer charged more than quote

So bit frustrated with our plasterer who quoted us £600 to do a job last year - but when they turned up to do the job three months later said their partner had misquoted for doing a large living room and the total would be £940.
They said they could do half if it was an issue.
They also wanted us to pay for someone to remove light fittings and radiators which hadn't been mentioned meaning more expense we'd not budgeted for or been asked to do.
Obviously was a bit over the barrel with that as we'd waited for the job and didn't want half doing.
I agreed but now we've had the bill through and they're already chasing payment.
We don't have the £940 spare until pay day in a week's time - it's not unreasonable to give it a week, surely, given the increased costs?

Do you ask shops when you go shopping if you can pay them on payday too, rather than when you acquire your goods?0

You had the work done last year and are only being invoiced this week?
What are the terms on the invoice for payment. Surely you would have had the money to pay it when you committed to the work being done at that price?
Personally I think it is unreasonable to expect them to wait. The payment should have been ready and waiting when works were agreed to be done.1 -
You have paid at least the £600 already?
As PP said, you should not have committed to the work going ahead unless you had put aside the money to pay for it.Decluttering awards 2025: 🏅🏅🏅🏅⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️, DH: 🏅🏅⭐️, DD1: 🏅 and one for Mum: 🏅0 -
They quoted us last year. We agreed. They turned up to do the job on Thursday and said it would be more money. We had the money they quoted ready to be paid, but as I explained it put us in a tricky position not having the new amount until pay day. The money was ready when the work was agreed to be done - they inflated the cost.HampshireH said:You had the work done last year and are only being invoiced this week?

So did you explain his to them and that you wouldn't be able to afford it for a liitle bit longer?Jmoo said:

I guess based on these replies I should have just sent them home and told them to forego the two days if that's the opinion of everyone. I'll have to just loan the money.
Thanks anyway.1 -

They probably won't cry if you give them £600 now and the rest later. It's a bit of give and take - they surprised you after all, but you should definitely pay the £600 now and be nice about it because you're now surprising them because you didn't tell them you wouldn't have it all for a week.I can't tell you how many people in the building trade live hand to mouth 😞Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Try that next time you go shopping, offering them some now and the rest later because you was surprised how much it cost even though you knew before you took everything.Doozergirl said:They probably won't cry if you give them £600 now and the rest later. If they give the customer a quote for a job then realise there was a mistake and it will cost more, but rather than calling in advance to let them know and instead show up and tell them the price has gone up by more than 50%, then a little give and take is not to much to ask. They messed up but still got the job.dil1976 said:
