But the points were not yours to spend, so if you had spent them, you would have had to re-pay them.

If you were not notified you won the competition, then you did not win. It was just an error. Errors happen.

Same thing when money gets deposited in your bank account by error. Just because it's there, doesn't mean you can spend it.
I wonder if some who got the points have spent it , if so, will they take civil action to recover it.

  • i was credited 100k and then a week lated debited 50k.  no contact at all from Nectar or Sainsburys.  Why didn't they email everyone?  I called Nectar and they say I won 50k and I can keep the remaining points.  However I don't see any competition prizes where 50k are offered.  perhaps this is a compromise, but if they knew about the error then they should have contacted everyone affected (3054 cardholders I think he said)

You need to find out if and what you won.

If you won  100,000 points then that's what you should get, if they have paid other people extra points that's not your problem

If you got 100k points credited then I think it is likely you were the actual winner? e.g. the 50k points that were the prize then the 50k they put into everyone's accounts by error, which they then took back.

I would just hold onto the remaining 50k points for now just to check it isn't an error. I imagine they are super busy trying to sort the mistake out at the moment!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

This happened to me, too, and points auto-converted to British Airways miles after being in my account for over a week.

Now, two weeks later, Nectar has sent me an email saying that they're taking back the points and giving me 2500 points as as an apology.... Problem is the points are already gone!  I guess they can un-convert the miles?

These are the replies from nectar and Sainsbury’s.

  • I've only just found this thread after getting rubbish responses from Nectar CS on twitter... I originally thought I may have been the only one but it seems I wasn't. However I've got a few more interesting bits to add...
Here was their response on 9th Jan:

I’m sorry you were credited with the incorrect amount of points for the promotion. To correct this the points that were awarded in error have been removed. I appreciate this is frustrating. I've added 500 points as a goodwill gesture and raised a case for you as only 80,000 points should have been removed as you won 20,000. I’ve raised a case for this and your reference is 230109-000873. Please allow up to 28 days for an update. Hope this helps. Chris

So this placated me a little as £100 is better than nothing.. still gutted I didn't transfer to avios because I could have totally lived with a massive minus nectar balance!

Anyway so I waited the 28 days and nothing so got in contact today again and here's their response:

Hi, There was some confusion over this competition. There were no 20k point winners, only one 100k points winner. An email has been sent to all customers affected by this and a goodwill gesture was given. Chris

I wasn't sent an email... anyone get one?

So I replied with "well I got 500 points but surely that was the tiny sorry for having to contact you and the lower prize value"

    and in response got:

As explained there was some confusion over the T&Cs for the competition. Everything has been explained in the mail and a goodwill gesture given. Chris

So at this point I wasn't aware of the T+Cs that someone mentioned above about a letter or something but I was still confused and asked them: Who was confused? I did everything asked of me. So it must be you that's confused... and surely T+Cs are legally binding?
Anyway I asked for the mystery email to be sent again and for it to be escalated but having read the stuff about the T+Cs it won't go anywhere.

Mind you I have this part in B+W: "I've added 500 points as a goodwill gesture and raised a case for you as only 80,000 points should have been removed as you won 20,000."

So don't know if that makes a difference.

Still astonished that they made two mistakes and then thought I'd be placated by £2.50.
£500 to £2.50? Could they take the proverbial any more? I think it is literally the smallest amount they can credit.
Then to imply that I was confused etc.
