You still have not given the vital information, your 12 month actual kWh usage.  Jan to Mar gas is generally higher than Oct to Dec, for me that was 1.5 times the amount and this winter is forecast colder than last.

People keep saying this winter is forecast colder than last but I see no evidence of where these claims come from. When I look at the weather forecast ensembles they are all over the place and predominantly warm.

i dont know about this year vs any other year but most years january is the coldest month so if the question is about estemated gas use then knowing the ops use in jan would help put a ceiling on it.

    You know...the people...them....

I agree have not seen any valid statements to backup infact winter so far is Warmer. We are 37 days into the 90 day long winter and so far it has been over 4oC on average warmer than last winter for us

At the end of the day, it's been shown that the increase is quite probably about right, so why not let the DD increase for the next 3-4 months and then take stock based on what you have used/account balance?

What is the name of your tariff? Is it one of the ones that is heavily discounted due to the current cap? If so, you could be reverting to the much higher fixed prices come April 1st and this will have been taken into account in the review. When you signed up for the tariff you would have had a letter - should be on your My Account if you’re paperless - giving the tariff prices you signed up to. What are they?

The monthly Direct Debit amount is not fixed, your supplier will adjust that based on your usage, usually adjusting every six months if you have a smart meter, or potentially on any schedule if you have a dumb meter and are not submitting regular meter reads.

Definitely challenge them.  They are overcompensating to ensure you stay in credit and will say it's to protect you from future increases (eon did the same with me).  But they aren't taking into account that you are on a long term fix so don't need much protecting.  Chances are they will be happy to have you increase by maybe £20 a month to keep things ticking along nicely.
