I received details to start a new payee acc.....only one set of details ...after setting up the sort code and acc no the bank (Nationwide Bld Society) went away to validate the details given....this they said matched so I proceeded with payment...Days later my payee said no money had been received...Now discovered the bank had paid the money into the wrong account....same name but different sort code and acc no...which later was found to be a previous acc the payee had closed with another bank.
Nationwide said this was impossible as their system could not change payee details...after re checking my acc the details inputted had been changed to the incorrect one
Yet I had never been given the details the money had been paid to .....This is not safe banking

I agree with Nationwide - they would not have changed the account details you entered.0

I wouldn’t know if it work like this , but is it possible that the recipient was in the process of switching accounts through CASS ?
Like I said, I don’t know If this would even effect it .0 -
Did the payee give you the correct details or his old account details?0
-
Lets look at the facts....all the details were given by Email so no mix up ...Nationwide paid the money into an account .that was were never known by me or the payee...Only the bank were able to get this info and most certainly they paid the money into the wrong account0

No, you entered sort code/Account no. They run COP check, you agree to details & pay to that account. There is no way for the bank to change the details.Yorkshirerover said:Lets look at the facts....all the details were given by Email so no mix up ...Nationwide paid the money into an account .that was were never known by me or the payee...Only the bank were able to get this info and most certainly they paid the money into the wrong account
COP is either
Yes Full name match
No partial name match
No name does not match
Or Unavailable
Either way it is up to you to agree & proceed.
My guess is someone gave you the old account details, as even a closed account can still be valid.
Is this a person or a business?

Thanks for the comments......No the payee only ever gave me one set details....and these were not the ones Nationwide paid.....and the payee had finished with the incorrect account several months ago...(different bank etc)
My theory is that the Nationwide bank when validating the original input...confirmed the old bank details and then changed the info to suit....Nationwide obviously said this was impossible....but the facts are they paid it into the wrong account that was only ever known to them !!0 -
How would Nationwide have confirmed the old bank details if they didn't have them?3
-
Yes the payee's name matched ok...but rest of the details were incorrect and yes perhaps I should have checked....but I never expected the details to be changed ....I will in future...now waiting for the money to be returned....and be very careful when setting up a new payee in future0

So it was the payee‘s account the money was sent to, as per your instructions, which you had taken from the payee.Yorkshirerover said:Thanks for the comments......No the payee only ever gave me one set details....and these were not the ones Nationwide paid.....and the payee had finished with the incorrect account several months ago...(different bank etc)

Hi band 7....not sure of your comment....the bank paid the money into the wrong account....Fact....after cross checking with the payees original info...I the realised the bank had paid an entirely different account and sort code.......The payee said that account was closed a long time ago....and this was a business account
Not sure about the CASS details0
