price of fuel

My dad got a B reg escort diesel when they first came out, Diesel was less than half the price of petrol.
A few years later it was nearly the same price as everyone started switching to diesel.
Same happened when people went over to LPG, the cheap tax, vat went up.

It's unlikely they are running at a loss, and a standalone petrol station won't be able to run as a loss leader to get people into the supermarket.

Thousands of businesses run at a loss (knowingly or otherwise), until the day they go bust. They may well be making a gross profit on the fuel itself, but not enough to offset the overheads of the business.1 -
Because they are still thereCar_54 said:jimbo6977 said:If an independent Texaco franchise in a tiny town in Shropshire can make money at 139p/l then everyone can, so anyone selling at more than that (other than the tiniest remote independent) is basically a ripoff merchant.
How do you know they're making money?1 -
Yeah, that's not the one I thought I quoted.
And you're right, there may be hidden losses, but they aren't selling fuel on the forecourt for less than they are paying for it. If they can sell it for x, then everyone else should be able to match it.

The price of fuel is going up due to Russia and Ukraine war. We used to mainly get our fuel from Russia0

RAC have now agreed we are being ripped off
https://media.rac.co.uk/pressreleases/fuel-falls-by-9p-a-litre-in-december-but-is-still-too-expensive-says-the-rac-3226416
To have 2 supermarket fuel stations within 3 miles of each other charging 12p a litre difference for an extended period is profiteering. I know on a short term basis prices can vary but this is not a short term period and historically all in the area were roughly the same price.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
I think its time for RAC to buy hundreds of fuel stations so they can operate them and provide fuel at the lowest price possible.
