Resourcefulness: The budgeter's friend

@Cheery_Daff - It's nice to be able to bring our favourite plants to pastures new when we move. Many of mine have sentimental value as were given to me by my Mum. She was a fine plantswoman & loved to help me stock my garden. I started gardening with her when I was about 8 or 9 years old.
Of course, bringing divisions, cuttings, etc, also saves money because garden centre perennials & shrubs are not cheap to buy, so it's well worth doing.

definetly worth moving most favourite plants. We moved 7 years ago, house plants mostly went to a neighboure to look after, we also dug up our beautiful roses. We are looking to move again next year, and walked around the garden thinking baout what I want to take!! The roses will def be coming, im hoping to lift a couple of asparagus crowns, the magnolia and cherry are still in pots so they can come too. But probably not much else!will also take cuttings!!♥️ ♥️ ♥️🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸Decluttering 2025 So far 403 / 2025

Ooh Cheery has reminded me about the fuschia too - although I suspect ours is currently doing its annual impression of a bunch of dead twigs. It'll suddenly burst into life and flower like the little show-off it is in while no doubt! I'd love to take the redcurrant but really can't see that surviving being dug up, sadly!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

you could take a cutting of the red currant.

@EssexHebridean - I don't grow redcurrants, so am not coming from any place of special knowledge, but I don't think you've got anything to lose by attempting to transplant it in your future garden. Like most things, the best times for this are likely to be fairly early Spring & Autumn, but most of us gardeners have tried left-of-field planty stuff at some point & sometimes it works. You'd need to plan it so it's out of the ground for the shortest time possible. I'd try & get a good root ball, water it well then wrap in an old towel or similar to keep it moist. A bit of seaweed solution on replanting should help it to establish.
Am.not saying it'd definitely work, but if it was mine, I'd be giving it a go......though I do acknowledge that it creates another job at a busy time.

Mixed results here with moving a red currant. I bought mine from someone on eBay who had dug it up from the garden. It was quite a young plant when they did this and it was fine and thrived. Last year, we needed to move it about 2ft to accommodate a change in our raised bed which it was next to. Sadly it didn’t not like this and has died. (No huge loss to me as a) I’d bought it expecting a black currant - eBay seller had a mix up; and b) I’ve since inherited several at my allotment! But sad nonetheless.)Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

@themadvix - Always sad to lose a planty friend. I think I'd have tried moving it too, though. Sometimes we win these things, sometimes we lose. Ultimately, nature decides.

Hello Sunny Campers,
Just passed by our thermostat which is up on the hall bookcase. 18.5° !! Until only very recently we had it set at 18° & would have needed the heating to come on to bring it up to that. Am really hoping to see a difference in cost when the Cephalopods' statement lands later this week.
Today's small wins:
*No money spent.
*Pr-i-cked out 40 basil seedlings.
*Ditto 4 trays of baby lettuce.
*Planted spare sweet peas up the shopped from home obelisk & added some bird scarers made from old CDs & string.
*Did a few other plantings - lavender & an astrantia division from my friend.
*Watered greenhouse babies & the veggie seed troughs I sowed at the weekend. Mr F excited that the 1st of his shallots has sprouted.
*Changed meal plan to deal with a surfeit of eggs & milk by making a cheese & caramelised onion quiche. I used my 4-egg size quiche dish so we'll also have sufficient to feed us tomorrow night with salad & coleslaw.
*Made enough pastry to freeze some - enough there for a smaller quiche at some point or something else.
*2 baths from a single fill of hot water.
Might have achieved a bit more, but spent quite a lot of time on the phone trying to change the appointment date for my forthcoming scan, as I received my hospital letter today. I felt sorry for the admin team as their online appointments system had crashed & they were having to tell everyone to phone back after lunch.....then of course, everyone did, making the wait even longer..Can't complain though, as managed to secure a re-appointment the very next day after the original one so no extra waiting.
Well, nothing of excitement to impart so I'll love you & leave you (as my Dad was fond of saying)
