I applied for a Tesco Credit Card, but did not provide ID. Should this be on my credit report?

A while ago I applied for a Tesco Foundation Credit Card. They then mailed me a letter asking for ID, to which I never responded.
Now, I checked my credit report and this Equifax application was present as "Credit Card" which (from what I understand) means
they performed a hard credit check against my report.
I don't think this is fair, as I never provided ID.

What are my grounds for getting it removed?

None. You applied, they checked. As a result of those checks they requested more ID that you never supplied.
Will all be in the T&C's you agreed to when you clicked the submit button.

  • That doesn't make much sense.  If I had no ID, why would they place it on the credit report in the first place? Wouldn't they need ID to make sure it's the person they think it is, and then the hard search takes place?
  • If so, I should probably see about sending them the ID, so that hard search isn't totally wasted.

Oh yikes, my apologies.  Could someone move it?

They needed the ID to be 100% sure that you were you, if you were not you then you could/would have disputed the search, but as it was you, you have no grounds to dispute it.

Only if you want to open the credit card, but the applicable window has probably now closed anyway. Hard searches are not used or wasted, in general they are irrelevant after a few months.

it goes on your credit report when you do the application. thats when they look at your credit file. if after looking at your credit file theres not enough info on there to decide yes or no. thats when they contact you to ask for the more info. the mark on your file just says you applied and someone looked. not if you got it or not.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

My primary concern is that I don't want lenders seeing the mark on my credit report and assuming my application was denied.

The ID check will come after the credit check so will be on your credit search history.

Basically you’ve failed authentication and they can’t match you so need proof you are who you say you are. On the positive side it does mean you’ve passed the credit check as they normally only ask for ID if you’ve passed that phase. If you had sent ID in you would should have been given a credit card.
