  • https://www.wunderground.com/history/monthly/gb/southampton/EGHI has more local stations, although the historic observations seem limited to official weather stations rather than the very local ones.

For my location (not Southampton as linked, just chose a random one tp be able to link to the history page) the average of the average last year was 6.55℃ and this year 3.49℃.

Haven't looked at consumption yet, will read the meter just after midnight.

Yes was a sub zero cold spell but I only put my central heating on to avoid frozen pipes...I still managed only 700.gas kwhs in Dec..22 kwhs a day..I feel really adapted to colder weather..If you don t expose yourself to it you never adapt.room temp now at 10.45 pm on New Year's Day with no heating on is around 12 c...I m fine with that ..

I have only been comparing the CET (3.94 this year compared to 6.38 lasy) but will look at more local data.  Our Gas usage is down from 4200 last dec to 3200 this year but we are keeping the house a fair bit cooler.
    I think....

Is that out of necessity or just a personal challenge to get yourself used to temperatures that low?

I take it you don't have pets either or very supportive family members also up for the challenge?

i dunno. i recon the only way we could do without heat at all would be becayse the cats get very friendly when its cold. no need for hot water bottles when youve 2 cats and a dog that all like to heap on the bed :D
Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

I have a cat who s just gone out now into the night on the hunt for mouse, She s not bothered at all about cold temperature.
Yes, its a personal challenge just in case the future is bleak with even much higher kwh prices .

I m certainly not going to be using much gas/electricity if its £1 a kwh electric and 30 p a kwh for gas. And thats possible , so I may as well get trained up for it.
I think only people who are solo occupiers, which I now am , can put themselves through a little deliberate discomfort to see what my level is .Certainly my late wife would nt have stood for it having the rooms as cool as I have now

Makes sense, I couldn't even attempt this type of reduction given Mrs msttys need for warmth.

Long predictions for energy prices, last time I looked, showed a downward trend on prices. I believe the hope was by the time we reach April 2024 we could be at the same level as now (including the government discount so 34p/10.3p, but with some good time of use reductions available for all with smart meters.

Maybe someone has some up to date predictions they can share?

For our location this December has ended up being 4oC colder over the month as an average and you should bear that in mind when comparing with last year.

We are on target to only use 30kwh more so 3.2% increase on December 2021 but running the house warmer but more efficiently with a tailored weather compensation curve and other reductions in general electricity usage (we are electricity only and ASHP)

If you are interested the past data can be found on the following link once you have chosen your location.

    https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/uk/

Here was 9C colder, much bigger swing.  The weather approaching Christmas was more near the normal here.

The fact it was slightly colder on average than last Dec was outweighed by the extra sunshine we seemed to have had this year,  solar gain on a freezing cold day means we can get by with no heating at all from 9am to 3pm & even open windows around 11am for an hour.
