  • I have three balls of yarn, and I want to crochet a new scarf. I've noticed that I keep losing a stitch in each new row, and I don't know why. Of course, I don't really bother counting each line, I just wait until it all looks wonky :/ any ideas?
    I used to have a similar problem with gaining a stitch- turned out to be my haphazard choice of where to make the first stitch each time, sometimes putting it in front of the right place thus gaining a stitch- might you be doing something similar?

    Could it be you aren't making the right height chain to go from one row to the next?

    Hello @flamingo747 nice to see you. When you're crocheting along the row, are you working the last stitch of the row? It's often hard to see because it's the chains at the start of the previous row. You need to get the hook into the top chain or even the second chain if it's easier to get into. Could you put a photo up?

    150g sock yarn = 3 coupons
    Lined trousers = 6 coupons ...total 9/66 used
    2 t-shirts = 8 coupons
    Trousers = 6 coupons ... total 23/66
    2 cardigans = 10 coupons
    Sandals = 5 coupons ... total 38/66
    Nightie = 6 coupons
    Sandals = 5 coupons ... total 49/66
  • I'll try and get some pics. I normally do DC and a chain of three to go up to the next row. I don't DC into the base of the chain, and start on the next stitch, maybe I should be doing one in there?

    Is the whole thing in DC? I think we might need the pattern as well as a photo!  I'd normally chain to the height of the stitches in the row so there's no feeling of stretching it to make it fit, or ending up with loops sticking out.

  • No pattern, I'm usually just making dish cloths or scarves, I am not very good at crochet. Just dc all the way

    Let me know if it works for you. This is the way I learned how to do it and keep straight edges. Don't know if it's the 'correct' way but it works for me!  :)

    This is a section of a scarf for a Christmas shoebox. Can you see at the beginning of a row, there are 2 chain stitches in place of a UK treble/ US double crochet stitch. (I find that 2 chains keep a tighter edge) The first proper stitch goes into the next stitch, not the top of the final stitch from the previous row.
    When I go back along in reverse, I crochet into the last proper treble/ double then the last stitch goes into the top chain stitch. Hope this helps!

    Hmmm.... Now you've got me thinking @MrsCD. What you say makes sense, but I may have to dig out my hooks and some yarn and have a go, because I can't quite visualise it.  (I learned to crochet before I could read - I have no recollection of ever being taught, it's just something I know how to do.)
