How long for a funeral

Hi

How long would it take for a funeral to be held if it's very simple one and no cars but the coroner is involved but it was a sudden death and natural causes..

Thank you

What sort of funeral?  A humanist or church?  Burial or cremation?  I’ve been to a very simple cremation where the deceased had a very small turn out and it lasted about 15 mins.  Also a cathedral ceremony and burial which was 2 hours.

it depends if there is an inquest or not - if natural causes and sudden and the PM / doctors records indicate the cause of death then there will probably be no inquest and coroner will issue a certificate fairly quickly. Then it comes down to logistics ie times for crematorium etc the funeral directors tend to know the approx wait which varies hugely around the country - when mother died there was a problem with the crem at Shrewsbury so others in a wide area were busier than usual leading to lots of delays.

If it is burial that is often easier to arrange - again FD will know

Might be easier if you told us why you’re asking.
  • My mum passed suddenly on 2nd December  and the Coroner was involved. There will be an inquest later this year.  We were desperate to hold her funeral before Christmas and I badgered the Coroner's office to issue an interim death certificate and release her body. We were able to have a church service on 21st December but unfortunately there is no availability at the crematorium until Friday 30th.
    Hope this helps.

Have you had her body released.
If so, and there is availability on the 30th then there is your answer.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

My sister recently died, coroner involved. Took 6 weeks until we could have the funeral but they did say they were exceptionally busy.

I have had 3 elderly relatives pass away this winter and none of the funerals have taken place earlier than 4-6 weeks.  No idea why they take this long because in Ireland it takes just a few days to organise a very large funeral with cars, church, wake, flowers, service, service cards and small memorial cards.

I'm afraid you have two unknowns: how long it will take for the body to be released, and how long you have to wait for availability at your choice of funeral 'provider' (sorry, ghastly term but I couldn't think how else to phrase it). Might be worth talking to your preferred funeral director now to check the latter, with the caveat that you aren't yet sure when you will be able to start making the arrangements.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I'm not the one organising it.

The thing is my husband and I had a trip planned in middle of January and wanted to have an idea to see if we can still go ahead or change the plans
