So, according to the news, the government want early retirees to come back to work.
Looking forward to loads of you on here, going back to 12 hour night shifts!

I just posted about that in one of my threads - on early retirement and being FIRE

I can see that "initiative" going down like a fart in a spacesuit, amongst those it's aimed at.

Do they really think we haven't done our own sums?

Do they really think that spending money on an advertising campaign aimed at the "early retired" is going to money well spent, or just more wasted?

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

I was kind of hoping the campaign, if they really have to do one, would be to get people like me, 63 and still working around 50 hours a week, an incentive to get out, and create openings for young 'uns !
  • I’d probably be quite happy to work a couple or three days a week now and then.

Unfortunately it’ll cost me several hundred quid to ‘update my skills’ medical etc so it’s not worth it to me.

would cost me a bucket load and hours of CPD for revalidation, definitely not worth the faff

That is exactly the campaigns that were run during the recessions of the 1980's when there was high unemployment.

This time is different as employment is high and vacancies are unfilled.

The solution that might attract some back would be flexible approach - it does seem as though work is either full time 40 hours or nothing.  There are many that would like to do some shorter and more flexible hours (and avoid having to be involved in work-place politics).
