O2 sim-only coverage problems

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I’ve recently signed up to O2 sim only (4G). I only left EE because O2 include Europe in their plans. I live in an area (CW9) that has always been fine for 4G coverage for any provider. However, the coverage is now appalling, even in town centres it loses signal, calls always dropping out, can't send text messages.....

O2 say I’m on their normal network but it just seems appalling. Are sim-only customers on an inferior service or is it just me? I’m using an iPhone XR but I know someone else who has similar poor service on a more recent Iphone.

Any comments welcome!

Been on contract, now on sim only. Works just the same.

City centres can be fun with all the tall buildings blocking out signals. But daughters apple has issues while in car & moving, which my android does not.

Looking at some random postcodes in CW9 on the O2 coverage checker, O2 4G coverage seems patchy. Some areas were outdoors only. None were recommended for mobile broadband.

Their 3G coverage seemed better, so switching to 3G might help.

O2 coverage by me is patchy but I make use of WiFi calling to overcome the dead zones wherever possible (including at home)

Your iPhone will be wifi calling compatible but you need to get O2 to activate the option. You can either do that by contacting them using chat via their app or going into one of their high street stores. This covers both phone calls and text messages.

If it's any consolation I've used their EU roaming quite often this year and the speed and quality of the overseas providers is much better than O2 in the UK.
  • Thanks for the responses. I’m obviously just in poor area compared to previous providers I've used, I was just cynical that my mega cheap deal somehow put me on a reduced service but it's seemingly just poor for O2 coverage where I am.
