And for everyone else - this might or might not work, and certainly won't work if you don't also think about what your main thermostat(s) and boiler controls are set to.

For example - if your main thermostat is set to 18C, then no matter what you do with TRVs, you are unlikely to reach 25C in any room (unless it is very thermally distant from the stat).

TRVs are, very simply, thermostats that turn off individual radiators at specific room temperatures.  They do not control how much heat you get from a radiator, how fast the radiator heats up, or when your boiler comes on.

And as an aside - is it as grating to others to see "using an item for its designed purpose, according to its normal controls" described as "a hack"?

  • And as an aside - is it as grating to others to see "using an item for its designed purpose, according to its normal controls" described as "a hack"?

It is because its not a "hack". Following that advice will be far more constructive than remaining ignorant about TRVs and doing nothing.

This is the same reason that ASHP's don't usually perform satisfactorily when connected to radiators when it's cold.
And up until there you had me convinced you knew what you were talking about.  I presume what you mean is that ASHPs don't usually perform satisfactorily as a drop-in replacement for a gas or oil boiler when it's cold - which is true.  I replaced my oil boiler with an ASHP and it has kept us perfectly warm during the recent cold weather.  But we also replaced all the radiators with ones having a much larger surface area.
Note I used the term "usually". From what I've seen most people don't double the size or number of their radiators so need to keep the thing running at max flow temp (which is inefficient) 24/7 and still struggle. My neighbour supplements his with a log burning stove.
“Like a bunch of cod fishermen after all the cod’s been overfished, they don’t catch a lot of cod, but they keep on fishing in the same waters. That’s what’s happened to all these value investors. Maybe they should move to where the fish are.”   Charlie Munger, vice chairman, Berkshire Hathaway

The TRVs in my unused rooms are set to 1. I don't want the rooms to be warm enough to sit in for 15 minutes, I want them to be warm enough so they don't get damp.

I also keep my bedroom cooler than "somewhere I would sit for 15 minutes" because I'm mostly under the duvet when I'm in there and don't need it that warm, so it's set to 2.25.

Hopefully I don't have to sit in the bathroom for 15 minutes, I do eat plenty of fruit & veg! I do like it to be warm in there for when I shower though. TRV on 3

The living room I definitely sit in for 15+ minutes but the TRV is on full as the room stat is in there.

Not sure the 15 minute rule works   :/

It will be a big mess when Gas safe boiler fitters who don't know anything about heating systems and only fix or replace boilers start doing Heatpumps.

  • This is what I follow when lowering my boiler flow temperature.
Gives some idea on how low you can go on boiler flow temperature, even lower if your home is well insulated. As I've said on other posts I only have the hot water cylinder on for 2 one hour periods a day so @ 65c for 2 hours a day. When the heating is on for the rest of the day it's as low as I can get away with, it's been down to 50c today.

Does your boiler allow you to set different flow temperatures for h/w & c/h?

No only one setting for both, if the central heating is on at the same time as the hot water ,both heating and water have to be 65c .
But when not heating the hot water, its down to 50c outside temperature permitting, allowing the boiler to condense away.

No different to now, because customers expect to not be able to touch radiators heatpumps are left with settings to mimic gas boilers with auxillary inefficient electric heaters left to come on as well.

Rewinding a bit probably the same was current gas safe engineers leave boilers running set too high and inefficiently.

No change down to the customer to get to know their heating controls.

The only difference is, with a condensing gas boiler, you lose a few percent efficiency by having it wrongly set up. With a heat pump, it could end up costing three times as much!
