Less than 5% of obesity is due to medical conditions. If airlines pay for larger seats then ultimately everyone pays for this. It also encourages obesity. Andy should ask for compensation.

Hands up anyone overweight who deliberately got that way so they could get a larger seat on a plane. Nonsense.
  • I have never read so much nonsense, why do people think it is the responsibility of airlines to make bigger seats? Ultimately, it is dangerous to be overweight and accomodating large people doesnt give them the incentive to reduce their size. What next? A demand for bigger car seats as well?
  • He should complain to the crew and ensure Big Bob is aware of this. This is an increasing problem and therefore needs to be tackled by the airlines. I certainly would not put up with the discomfort because, after all, I have paid for my seat and expect to be comfortable and to not be squashed for the duration of the flight. If big people want to remain as such, then they are going to have to pay more and possibly have to pay for 2 seats too!:D
  • people that exceed their BMI (body mass index) should be made to pay extra , like wise if you are under your BMI you should get cheaper tickets, I would complain.

Fat people should be weighed and charged accordingly, either for excess weight or for two seats.

    Yes Andy should complain

I could think of a lot worse people to be sitting next to on a long haul flight.... like someone who has no sympathy for those who perhaps already have to deal with the day to day difficulties, stigma and prejudices because they have a problem dealing with the weight....

Happened to me on a flight back from Poland. Huge fat man (are we still allowed to call them fat or is it unslim?) sweating profusely squeezed in next to me. My heart sank. In fairness I have the same reaction when a parent with small baby/child sits near me.
As a side, whats the etiquette when you are sat in the quiet carriage on a train and a child is screaming its head off?

Better hope you don't have to sit next to me on your next flight as not only am a little on the large size (size 20 to be exact) I also have a 4yr old by my side and a 1 yr old that travells on my lap, mmmm............ on our trip back from paris last week she screamed and threw a paddy for 10 mins.... however we sat next to a lovely man that not only didn't compain he made the effort to be nice to us both and not compain about my childs legs spilling into his seat and in return we had a lovely flight chatting with my little girl entertaining him for the remainder of the flight... you get out of life what you put into it.... TRY BEING NICE

No if they are large and heavy they should be treated the same as the overweight people.

I was one of the first to reply to this thread and I said fat people should be charged accordingly Excess weight or 2 seats.

I stand by that statement, I dont think calling someone fat is abusive just a fact. wether they be that way from illness or self inflicted doesnt make any difference.

If someone is pig ugly, it would be quite insulting to say so, however you say it, it would be like saying "hey, your a dog".
so why is it ok to point out others inperfections.
When i last looked there were very few perfect folk out there...

Sorry I have to address this point. BMI is not a measure of your size, but only of your weight. I am 5' 2' and in the overweight band, but can easily fit in an airline seat. If some kind of measurement is to be brought in, it needs to be appropriate, BMI is not.

  • I am pretty slim, with narrow shoulders and narrow arms (however, I still am not happy with my weight and am losing more, because I like the look of a slim trim, HEALTHY (ie not skeletal) body).

I find that in cinemas, on planes, or anywhere that I am forced to share a space with another person, that I am regularly encroached upon, especially by men (women seem to be more considerate about making themselves fit into the space allocated to them).

I never use arm rests, always pull my arms in ACROSS my body, and sit quite happily and comfortably like that, and being pretty slim, I usually don't even hit the vertical line at the edge of my side of the arm rest!

I then very often find, that by my giving up my right to the arm rest, that not only do I lose that, but I also find that people beside me regularly then actually spill over into my seat. The only way to get away from them, is to then contort myself, and sit at an awkward bent sideways position.

The thing that really reallly REALLY annoys me, is that I'm sitting with my arms across my body, into myself, taking up as little space as possible, and I'm being encroached on by people who are sitting with their arms down by their sides, they don't bother to pull them into their body.

If I then protect my space, I have in the past had complaints from the people beside me! It's almost as though anyone larger than me heaves a huge sigh of relief at seeing little compact me in the seat beside them, oh brilliant I can get really comfy and spread out as much as I want, because she's not using all her space I can spread into it!

The thing is that I cannot sit distorted for any length of time, due to whiplash. I have to sit up straight, and I also have to regularly twist and turn and contort my head, otherwise I end up unable to get out doing all the things that I love to do (biking, riding, climbing) because my whiplash has flared again and I'm in agony...........

So sure I'm slim and I take up very little space, but would the people who if sitting with their arms by their side, spread over the invisble line at the edge of the arm rest (the majority of the population!), please take note, that is MY space and not yours! I have the right to that space, and you DO NOT! Keep your arms in to your own space and stay out of mine!
