Money Moral Dilemma: Should Andy complain about the Big Bob on his flight?

  • Of course he should complain. I had to pay £24 when my suitcase was 4 kilos overweight. Easyjet weren't interested in the fact I only weigh 55kg, when some of the passengers were at least 100kg!
  • Yes he should. Now that airlines try to squeeze as much money out of you as possible (size of hand luggage, weight of luggage, number of bags) they should also sort out the size and weight of the passengers.

I expect Andy may have tried very hard to keep the cost of his flight down with weight and size of his bags. I had my bags closely examined by the Flybe ground steward at Norwich Airport as he was trying get £5 extra out of me.

Such meticulous inspection should be made of some obese passengers.

... you know that if there were special seats for larger people, you'd have a flood of average-sized people saying they needed the extra large seats... same as you currently see for the emergency exit seats with lots of legroom.

I agree, when I was at my lightest, I was re-emigrating, and had an extra 20kg of luggage (the allowance was less than I thought), I had to pay over £400 in excess baggage, even though I weighed about 60kg - if that - at the time. Sat down for a 12 hour flight next to a huge guy who was (unintentionally) taking up my seat and sweating (wet to the unavoidable touch again) - now I'm sure it's not nice for them, but me and my baggage weighed significantly less than him, yet Ive had to pay a fortune extra. Really annoyed me. Thankfully the plane was really quiet, so crew suggested I headed to the back where I got a row of 4 seats to myself. Felt a lot better about that flight, but it's ingrained this sense of injustice in me hat a light and skinny guy who's crap at packing pays more than a heavier load.

True, but then it should swing both ways - they obviously need them they get them, they don't they pay.

I like to sit at the aisle in a cinema as I have long legs for a short guy (a friend is 4 inches taller than me but has the same length legs), but another friend I often go with is a LOT taller, and he needs the aisle. He gets it.

i had to sit infront of a guy, whos legs were right up the back of my seat. And refused to let me put my seat slightly back. So when the passanger in front of me put his seat right back i was ridged sitting staight up with a seat inches from my face. As i am shy i just put up with it, on a flight from the usa to uk. It was a very uncomfortable flight. When they put u sitting together at the desk, it means in one row, even if it means one person might be sitting on their own. Stupid airlines.

wat if u had to put up with someone very smelly!!!
A smile and manners doesnt cost any thing
  • Yes most definitely why should you pay the same amount and be made to suffer the airline should either provide fat !!!!!!! seats or set size restrictions. In this situation I would expect a full refund.
  • Regarding Andy & Bob. My wife & self often travel on charter airlines and have been refused a 3rd booked seat so we can spread over 3 seats. On one occasion a friend who was travelling with us could not come and rather than cancel his booking I turned up and asked for 3 seats. I was early at book-in desk so I knew most of the plane would be empty. Staff tried to refuse me then intimated that the third seat might not be near the other two. Eventually I got 3 seats together after a lot of arguing. I told them that I wanted the same coming back (From Salzburg). Alas, the Austrians were better at stonewalliing me and I did not get the return journey in comfort. I guess that they had been warned. Next time I shall book each way totally separately and suprise them! Regarding Andy, tough luck, Bob may have tried to buy 2 seats and been turned down just like me. Think on the bright side; he could have had someone elses kids sat next to him. Keep Well, GG.
  • There is a risk of DVT on any flight and it is important not to sit squashed in unable to move at all. If you have paid for a seat you are entitled to that amount of space so a discreet word with one of the cabin crew would be called for. No point in complaining after the flight as it could be too late.

I feel sorry for anybody that is put in a seat next to me on a plane. I do try very hard not to overspill waist/elbows/shoulders into their seat and frequently apologise if I do.
On my last flight, I had to ask for an extension to the seatbelt, my thighs continually pressed the button that reclined the seat and I couldnt pull the drink/food tray down.
The point that i'm trying to make is that it's as uncomfortable for the fat person as for the unfortunate passenger next to them. If there are any spare seats on the plane, then after take off I ask if I may move. If the flight is full, then I grin and bear it.

As far as being smelly: there's no excuse for bad personal hygiene. Being sweaty isnt the same as being smelly and there are a lot of skinny smelly people out there.

Please try to see the argument from both sides.
