If someone is pig ugly, it would be quite insulting to say so, however you say it, it would be like saying "hey, your a dog".
so why is it ok to point out others inperfections.
When i last looked there were very few perfect folk out there...

Calling someone fat is a fact. Calling someone a fat cow is an insult. The second relates to your comment above, not the first.

Sorry I have to address this point. BMI is not a measure of your size, but only of your weight. I am 5' 2' and in the overweight band, but can easily fit in an airline seat. If some kind of measurement is to be brought in, it needs to be appropriate, BMI is not.

Totally agree! If someone does not fit into one seat and encroaches on their neighbour they shoudl pay for two, and this should be done by measurement, not by BMI, BMI works for people who are heavy due to fat, but does not work for people who are heavy due to muscle!

I could think of a lot worse people to be sitting next to on a long haul flight.... like someone who has no sympathy for those who perhaps already have to deal with the day to day difficulties, stigma and prejudices because they have a problem dealing with the weight....

Why are you so angry? It's very clear, people who exceed their seat make life uncomfortable for the person beside them, this is particularly trying on a long haul flight. Just because you wish to have the space that you are entitled to and have paid for, does not mean that you are unsympathetic to someone elses problems, it just means that you don't see why you should be made to suffer for their ills!

A lot of people on here, have said that they would quietlly and delicately speak to the stewardess, they would not make a big fuss, they would not be rude, they would just stand up for their right to have a as comfortable as is possible in a situation that is uncomfortable enough when you have a person beside you who does not encroach on your space, seat.

I don't see why you are angry at people standing up for their right to the space that they have paid for. If I paid for a coffee and it wasn't full, I'd go back and quietely with no fuss ask for it to be filled up, it may even cause the waitress some embarrassment, but personally I would try to be as nice as possible, but I would still ask for it, I've paid for it, it's my right .........just because this is dealing with a situation that has huge social and personal phobias/stigmas/insecurities, does NOT mean that you shouldn't be able to ensure that you are not xtremely uncomfortable for the duration of a flight.
