Friends getting free gas should I report them

Completely off topic, but that did make me laugh. Thank you.Deleted_User said:You'll get a flood of two types of comment here now - neither useful for you unfortunately.
There will be a bunch of "you're a traitor if you tell, they are only sticking it to the man, power to the people..." countered by "won't you think of the children, everything is so unfair, there are people near me using food banks..."
Just look at the thread about turning on Christmas lights for some examples.
In the end, though, only you can decide. Their use isn't going to be stopping anyone else having gas, and isn't responsible for the price, but of course it is theft. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1 -
I'd report it (it, not them) because it's possibly unsafe. If you live next door, I'd definitely report it!
If they get found out, you've taken nothing from them.2 -
Himaisie_cat said:My concern would be that a potentially dodgy gas connection could lead to an explosion at some point. Do they have near neighbours? Because it's not just their home that could be affected.
With respect it does not matter if they live near anyone as if there is an explosion, the 999 services will have to attend and could enroute have an accident, kill someone but more likely the explosion would take away that service from another that needed it and were not acting unlawfully. To be clear I am not having a go at you just making a point
OP
With respect, it is a question that does not need to be asked but is common sense because of the massive risk of explosion.
How would you feel knowing the fact and not reporting them but just posting here and then something went wrong?
Thanks

A lot of people questioning the quality of the installation. Again I'm not prepared to dox them or start giving people a breadcrumb trail but they used a reputable local firm (it's a well known company that's been in the town for decades) as I understand it the meter was never registered and their supplier kept dithering and not getting back to them when they tried. It was a 'computer says no' moment each time they rang.

Sounds exactly like the situation I witnessed, I'd just leave them to get on with it, the suppliers will do something about it, eventually. As long as they don't stop them from trying to inspect the meter/pipework when they do, they'll likely just ignore all current usage.FlaatusGoat said:A lot of people questioning the quality of the installation. Hi,how did the 'reputable local firm' manage to tap into the mains gas supply?5

...and what happens if the Gas Network is ever switched off for works in the area? An unlisted property will neither be warned in advance nor checked for safety before the gas is reconnected.3

Gas explosion and you could have prevented it?Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!2

If they aren't being billed, presumably they have no gas supplier so who would you dob them in to? The distributor I suppose.
The system simply won't allow billing if the meter is unrecorded. Similarly if the records show you have a meter, even when you haven't they will send out bills. I know this because it happened to me after my gas supply had been removed. The fact that they can't possibly read it is no handicap - they simply estimate the usage."Things are never so bad they can't be made worse" - Humphrey Bogart0
