Back billing of utilities supplied by landlord

    You can delete or edit your own entries, but you can't 'close a thread': it's a public forum.
    Your LL can back-bill you up to 6 years later, so we were simply trying to establish that you had been prudent and set money aside regularly for the inevitable bill. If you have access to what we assume is a private sub-meter, then you will be able to work out approximately what the bill might be. 
    In the meantime, you can continue to benefit from what is in effect an interest-free loan from your LL.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    I have contacted citizens advice who advised me to contact Ofgem. Ofgem advised me to contact citizens advice!!
    As already stated. the landlord is not an electricity supplier so the 12 month rules for them will not apply. So it is probably best to put aside whet you expect you would have paid if you had your own account with an energy supplier, and if/when the landlord does bill you the money will be there to pay it. Will be interesting to see how many kwh the landlord thinks you have used in what timeframes, and how they intend to prove it after this time though.

    A piece of paper with a hand written number on it does not make good evidence.
    Did / have you ever had access to the meters since you moved in?
    Are they secured away and you haven't had the means to access them?
    Have you chased the landlord by email and do you have these emails?
    When you get a bill, challenge how it is calculated, the unit price charged and evidence to support any of the landlord's figures.
    Put together an estimated usage in kwh for your time there using online tools / friends with similar setups.
    You cant get out of paying if you owe, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't che k what you are charged is reasonable.
    If it goes to court, having a prepared alternative estimate with sensible assumptions may help if the landlord decides to bill you for 6 years use at todays kwh rates.
