For all practical purposes the variation in CV makes no difference whatsoever. It's just one very small variable in heating costs among much bigger ones, primarily daily ambient temp variation.
The boiler doesn't 'notice'. it just burns the fuel you supply it with until the 'stat or timer tells it to stop. If the fuel is of s slightly lower energy content, it'll take a bit longer to raise the temp from a to b, that's all.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Just checked my bills over the last 4 years and the calorific value has been a maximum of 39 and a minimum of 38..

From Gov.UK:
The Gross Calorific Value (real gross dry) shall be in the range 36.9 to 42.3MJ/m3

In any case - why should a variable Calorific Value affect the ability of a supplier such as Octopus from providing a real time reading of gas useage ?Surely they should just pump in any change in CV - and output the useage in kWh or even £'s ?

What do you mean by ‘real time’? You will have to suggest a change to Octopus: there is a feedback icon in the App.MouldyOldDough said:In any case - why should a variable Calorific Value affect the ability of a supplier such as Octopus from providing a real time reading of gas useage ?Surely they should just pump in any change in CV - and output the useage in kWh or even £'s ?0 -
Because the CV isn't known in advance or at real time. It's calculated once or twice a day and is different at every gas terminal.MouldyOldDough said:In any case - why should a variable Calorific Value affect the ability of a supplier such as Octopus from providing a real time reading of gas useage ?Surely they should just pump in any change in CV - and output the useage in kWh or even £'s ?0 -
An interesting graphic on the Irish Gas website that reinforces the point that CV changes:
