I have received an email from John Lewis saying that my payment is due in ten days, but I haven’t yet received a statement from them, neither a paper one (which I requested when I set up the account) nor an electronic one. Has anyone else encountered this situation?

This would be the first payment since they changed to New Day.

TIA

If you requested the dead tree system then it's more than likely it has been delayed in the post with all the other mail due to strikes and Christmas. Why not message / ring them up and ask if it has been generated? In the worst case scenario, you will know from your records what you have spent, presumably this is shown on the website too, so you can pay that amount as a safety net.

Set up a direct debit in the mean time to ideally take the full balance or at least the minimum to avoid late payment charges/markers

Even if you request a paper statement it should also be available online a few days before the post arrives.  That's how the old JL card worked.

However this is Newday and the move by JL to them as a provider has been far from smooth.

That’s why, at least for this first payment, I want to see the statement first and check it with my receipts.

@Farfetch, definitely a dead tree fan here, I find it easier to read (with magnifier) than on screen 🙁 my bad!

I’m also very wary of doing financial things online, so haven’t set up to access details via apps or or online or whatever. Waiting for the statement to arrive so I can set up direct debit with the help of my bank. 🦖definitely a dinosaur lol!🦕

I did manage to get through to them on the phone (and pass the multiple, multiple-choice menus!) and explain the situation and let them know I am not deliberately defaulting on the payment.

  • You should be able to get the direct debit setup with the card provider, your bank won't be the ones to do this

Is that safe? What stops them taking whatever they fancy? (Rather like the tourist on the bus who opens their purse and invites the driver to take the fare/what they want?)

Ok, maybe I missed the memo about direct debits, I only have one, for energy bills, and have had them (some years ago now) change what they take without notification (not current supplier, but old one (now folded)).

Thanks for the hint, though, something to follow up on.

I guess I must look for “21st Century Consumer Banking for Dummies”.

The good news is, the large print version of the statement arrived this afternoon, so hopefully just enough time to pay before Xmas.

I have the NewDay Aqua card and you can pay online very easily - the available balance updates really quickly once paid using debit card.  I prefer to pay by cheque / post, but the online has got me out of jail a couple of times (including this month when the statement did not arrive).  I assume the NewDay JL card will have the same engine behind it as my NewDay Aqua card, but with a different graphical interface.

Can you not just pay what you owe over the phone then worry about sorting the statement out after?
  • @Grumpy_chap @RhondaD I don’t do online or phone banking, so the options you suggest wouldn’t work.

Without seeing the statement, I don’t know what I owe. I always check credit card statements with the receipts in case of error. There’s no way I’d just pay what a stranger tells me to without verifying it.

I don't do online banking but my NewDay card has its own online portal that allows payments easily using debit card.

NewDay do not allow as long between statement date and payment due date as some other card providers.  I only just got the statement yesterday (Monday 19th) for payment due date tomorrow (21st) - that is never going to be achievable via post but the NewDay online portal makes it easy.  I am an absolute luddite when it comes to these things and even I found it easy.

Obviously, my card is Aqua and not John Lewis, but I'd be amazed if that did not also come with the same easy to use portal albeit via a differently branded front-end.

We really cannot blame NewDay for the postal strikes.  Also, remember, NewDay allow payment by post which some card providers do not even facilitate any longer.

Did you manage to get your payment made?  I note you had 10 days from the 12th so due soon.  I understand your view that you should be able to do this by post but are your principles so robust that you are willing to risk your credit history?

You don't need to do online or phone banking to just phone them up and ask to pay the statement balance with your debit card. Honestly, you're over complicating this.
