Instead of this talk about estimates and predictions
What has been your ACTUAL consumption since February ?. You know what readings you gave when you opened the account and you know what the reading is today.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

My actual for last year Sept 30th 2021 to Sept 30th 2022
Electricity 790 kWh
Gas 5600 kWh
365 days
At current prices works out at £1112.39 annual cost = DD 92.69
I have just spoken to my supplier and given them my last years energy usage, they can check this out because they have just taken my account over from SSE
They take no notice and intends to increase my DD from £91 to £150, they did offer a reduction of £15 to £135
I have confirmed to them my DD will be cancelled forthwith and agreed with them I will pay by standing order of which I will set at £100
Like I said before energy companies are a law unto themselves0 -
When you first posted I assumed the 5000 units was for electric.
You are a dulal fuel user - so is that estimate for gas or electricity ?
You have an electric car and ......................................

Hi,OP, you are about to go through probably the coldest 2 months of your first year, using more energy. You mention charging car on off peak, do you also have storage heaters?0

Why not live with the Direct Debit for a couple of months? The reason that it will be higher now is that they are now longer allowed to let you get into debt over winter so the fact that you are coming into the highest usage period of the year will have an impact on the Direct Debit amount.MikeJXE said:

Your unit rates will rise by around 8% as the rate for Direct Debit payments is lower than cash, which is how a standing charge payment is classified. You would be better off going to whole monthly bill Direct Debit (difference suppliers call it different things) which mean that you pay for what you use in full every month, but obviously that makes costs vary from month to month. Depending on your billing cycle if they issue you a bill for more than you use and you do not pay the full amount they will record that as a non-payment on your credit file.MikeJXE said:I have confirmed to them my DD will be cancelled forthwith and agreed with them I will pay by standing order of which I will set at £100
You seem to enjoy making statements, but the issue here is that you do not fully understand what is happening. Regulatory guidance says that they are now allowed to let you get into debt over winter, you have arrived at the start of winter without the cushion of a credit so therefore payments need to be higher initially. You have then taken action which will cause your bills to increase and then complain that they do not follow the law because they are following the rules laid out by the regulator that they are required to follow as a condition of their license.MikeJXE said:Like I said before energy companies are a law unto themselves0 -
MikeJXE has just hijacked the thread and confused everyone.Robin9 said:When you first posted I assumed the 5000 units was for electric.

The OP hasn't responded since before the discussion sidetracked.0 -
In my experience Shell Energy are very good at overestimating the amount a customer will use.
I know someone who was transferred to Shell with a debt of £2000 (no idea how she managed to rack that up without her then supplier noticing). 2 years later she was in credit by £2400 with Shell.
She has now moved into a care home and her son is trying to get the overpayment back.
I'm also with Shell and am keeping a very close eye on my account balance. Currently £330 in credit on a monthly DD of £200. I expect to still be in credit by April and will be reducing my DD accordingly.0 -
Most times I have changed suppliers they have asked me as part of the switching/quoting process what my use was over the last 12 months and simply use that as their 'estimate' for the next year. Something different would obviously need to happen when moving to a new property.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I agree with the overestimation with Shell
"We recommend putting your direct debit to £300 a month"
Actual bill £175 for electric and er standing charge only for gas so around £30
Erm don't think so thank you Mr Shell. I pay for what I use not what you think I should be using
Oh and I am the only wage earner in the house so just going with their suggested direct debit isn't an option0
