Driving at night does everyone find it hard

The use of language has been shown to be an important factor in attempts to change the population's mindset when it comes to discussions about the death and destruction that is a daily occurrence on the UK's roads. The term 'accident' has the effect of implying that a collision was unavoidable and potentially allows those involved to abdicate responsibility for their actions.user1977 said:

In fact, it's often the case that many collisions could have been avoided by, for instance, better speed management, road users being more aware of hazards and of driving conditions, or by minimising in-vehicle distractions (such as the use of mobile phones whilst driving). That is not an exhaustive list - there are many other reasons why collisions occur, and all 'types' of road users are at fault to some degree or another.
The way in which most of the UK population appears to accept that the thousands of deaths and serious injuries that occur on our roads each year is a price worth paying for our 'right' to drive whenever and however we want is, in my opinion, a scandal. Coupled with the sometimes-ludicrous judicial sentences that are handed down to road users who kill and maim with impunity, it means that we are all still a long way off making our roads safe any time soon for drivers, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians alike.3 -
I bet you there are people out there that need to wear glasses/eyes checked and don't and that is what I really find "disturbing"
I agree, I have my eyes checked every year and when the time comes which is before the point of not being able to drive safely I will have mine done.
When I turned 80 I felt I was a good driver, never had an accident since 1962 but I needed a second opinion as to my safety on the road, I attended The institute of advanced Drivers, IAM in Derby. I wanted to know if I was safe on the road.
The course gives you an idea of how good you are plus you can take the advanced driving test, Each 1 hour lesson or drive out gives your observer who is ex police driver insights into how good or bad you drive.
I did 4 trips and was told I was ready for the test, it wasn't the test I was interested in, more important to me was my safety on the road.
I was 12,000 mile a year pleasure driver but now only about 6,000, There are many bad drivers on the road so one needs to more aware, I have dash cam front and back so if I am involved in a smash I can prove fault

"at night" isn't necessarily an issue on its own, depending on other factors.
Add in heavy rain, rush hour, "ninja" pedestrians, scooters and deliveroo cyclists etc etc and it's much worse (IMO) than just a dark quiet unlit road.
My idea of driving hell ☹️How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
I’m gona do a iam advance driving course anyone who’s done it did it help?0

OP, from previous threads you’ve posted, your issue is with driving generally, not just at night.
Have you taken up any of the suggestions made in your earlier threads to help with confidence etc?All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.4 -
At 80 years old The reason I did it was to make sure I was driving safely, I passed my test 1962 but have always kept up with the Highway Code. It's good to have someone better than you looking for any faults in your driving and yes there were a couple, mainly indicating when not necessarysim2335 said:I’m gona do a iam advance driving course anyone who’s done it did it help?0 -
Fair point. Most of my driving is rural. I don't see many street lightssevenhills said:
I guess rural drivers may need brighter lights, which is why the OP is finding it difficult to drive at night.fatbelly said:When I first got my Seat Mii I did find the headlights a bit dim. I replaced the bulbs with, I think, Osram Nightbreaker Plus - it noticeably improved them.
I find my own lights hardly matter, I can drive perfectly well on side lights or headlights. I fact I have noticed some cars don't even bother to switch them on.0 -

This is why I wait for them to turn etc and drivers behind me get impatient but that is their problem.
It's not just about keeping up with the highway code but practising it and to many times I see people not indicating and these people slow traffic flow down then complain about the traffic.
A lady down the road drives to the local shops etc in her l automatic car a Lexus 400 I think, and I was staggered when she told me it was her 92nd birthday a couple of years ago. I've been behind here from the local shops and she drives very well indeed.
Thanks
