Taking my EonNext fix to new home with smart meters
I’m moving into my new home next week and the current utilities provider is Scottish Power but EonNext are taking over the supply from the day I move in and keeping me on my current fixed rate. That all seems on track and I can see the new address on my account, but I’ve just learned that the property has smart meters so I wondered if anyone here had experience of switching to EonNext from SP and how smooth was the process?

I believe the new faster switching rules are in so it should be very fast. I will have to double check that link here

Just get your meter readings done and take pictures for future proof contact Scottish power advise them what is happening and they will create your account for you for the switch to happen.1 -
Typically, you have to create an account with and provide readings to the incumbent provider on the day you move in, or it can cause problems with the switch - as we've seen through many threads on the forum. The presence or absence of smart meters won't make a difference.
Fingers crossed you avoid this, but you may find SP blocks the switch to Eon if you haven't opened an account with them first.1 -
You are lucky that Eon.Next have allowed you to move house yet keep your existing fixed rate. You'll be even luckier if they manage to take over the supply on the day you move in, usually you have to spend a short while with the incumbent supplier. Even though your property has smart meters, you should play safe, make sure you read the meters when you take over the supply and provide that reading to Scottish Power.Reed1

(and congratulations on the new home!)1

You must create an account with SP and give them your initial reading before you can initiate the switch otherwise you'll end up with no end of problems.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1

The smart meters don't really have any bearing on this, but if they are the older SMETS1 type, then they may revert to dumb meters once the switch to Eon goes through.
No idea how you managed to change the supply on a property you don't yet own or occupy. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Possibly an Eon/backside-elbow scenario!macman said:The smart meters don't really have any bearing on this, but if they are the older SMETS1 type, then they may revert to dumb meters once the switch to Eon goes through.

Thanks everyone. I’d assumed that I wouldn’t need to set up an account with SP first based on this email from EonNext
“I can confirm your new property supply is in the process of being transferred over to us. It is currently in the pre-registration phase and is due on supply with us on the 14th of December. Can you please provide opening meter readings on this day to ensure we are billing you accurately based on your usage.”
But from what some of you have said I should maybe try and contact SP. They may not speak to me as I’m not yet living in the new home but worth a shot, and I will send opening readings to both providers on 14th anyway.

I just got this email from SP who are the provider of the property I’m moving into tomorrow.
We're sorry you've decided to leave us.We wanted to let you know that there's no need to call us with your final meter readings. We'll take the readings automatically from your smart meter on your switch date and use these to close your account and create your final bill. This will be with you shortly.
Can’t decide if this bodes well or not! Maybe EonNext and SP between them have sorted out my switch from day one and SP’s bill to me will be £0 … or I might get the full SP bill that should be paid by the people leaving the property.0 -
It may interest you to know that I have Scottish Power SMETS1 meters, which are being read successfully by E.ON Next.
Electricity meter looks like this: (Serial number redacted)
