Passport question.

My sons UK passport was issued May 18 and has expiry as Oct 23. We are travelling to Maldives Feb 23. I'm aware adult passports for EU cannot be longer than 10 years, so assume children's is 5. Maldives require 6 months on passport on return I think, but obviously isn't EU, but I know  passports issued now are only for 10 years, so am wondering if this applies everywhere.

Will the passport be ok for our trip or I do I need to renew it?

  • I'm a bit confused by your post, but try googling passport requirements for the Maldives when flying from the UK. That may give you some clarification.

If I take the expiry printed on the passport it's fine. If I take 5 years from issue date it's not, as it will expire may 23 which is within 6 months of entry. There have been stories about people being refused boarding to EU destinations as the additional passport months didn't count, but I'm not going to EU.

My query is about the extra months on the passport. I know the requirements for the maldives and as printed the passport is fine. That is unless they don't count the extra months, in which case it isn't. The .gov.uk site doesn't help with this.

The only issues I've read about are people travelling to EU. UK passports are now 10 years without any extra months though. Is this a global rule, or just to stop issues entering EU countries?

The maximum ten year validity rule for EU travel does not apply elsewhere and a 5-year passport even with a few months extra is not affected anyway. You have no need to renew.

  • Thanks. I asked this question on Facebook and was largely told I needed to renew. Reading Maldives entry requirements compared to say Spain as you say has no mention of 10 years length or any other condition. All they require is 6 months on the passport post entry if arriving by air, which it has.

Has the Maldives moved to the EU?

Does your son live in the EU?

If not why are you worried about the EU for 2 non EU countries?

Did anyone there actually cite any relevant definitive supporting evidence for their opinions?

When I had a similar query about my passport and traveling to Switzerland I phoned up the embassy.  They were very helpful and even sent me an email to confirm their opinion which I took with me in case I was questioned. (it was re 6 months on the passport but I only had 2 but it wasn't an issue as the passport isn't from the EU)

One question, is your flight direct from the UK to the Maldives, or via an EU transition?

We fly to via Doha. It's funny as although a few posts on facebook said no problem (some from people who had travelled in similar circumstances with no issue) many said new passport required, so the exact opposite to here, but of course it's just opinions with no evidence to back it up. I haven't been on facebook long, in fact I only joined as there is group for the island we are travelling to.

I originally thought it was fine but for some reason recently started to doubt myself.

That was what confused me! I wasn't sure where the EU came into the equation.
