I switched to RBS and fulfilled all the criteria to get the £175, now received. I had to get the app, but when I try to use it I fail the biometric approval every time. The chat is not helpful. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I would prefer to use online banking on my laptop but it still wants approval on the app to make a payment. Any ideas please?

Can't help much as it's been working fine on my iPhone and I am pleased I don't need the card reader any longer

If you can't get it to work, it can be turned off, and it reverts you to card reader and texts for approvals.

Have you tried the passcode instead?
  • I imagine this is the same as on the Natwest app which I have.

I find it very tricky to use, and often have to have several tries. It's  a bit fussy about the lighting conditions, and I often have to move within the room. Also, it tells you to blink, but a quick normal type of blink will never work.  I open my eyes wide then close them and hold for a second before opening them again.

I regret opting for it really, but I think it's probably a poor example of its type.

It's not the login, it's the approval of transactions. Login uses the phone biometrics, transaction approval uses RBS/Natwest own technology. It is the latter the OP has trouble with

You can delete it and revert back to card reader and text msgs
  • Thanks for replies.
Band7 is right. So is Marmaduke. I just can't seem to hold the phone right for long enough.
I can't delete it as that action requires biometric approval too!
I have asked the Chat to remove it, Hopefully they should have done so by tomorrow and then I should be able to use my card reader.

I have a completely different experience, and worked fine every time, even though I originally set it up without glasses but then I am always wearing a pair when I use it and it still works fine at the first blink (may be obvious but you need to blink both eyes)
  • I have tried with and without glasses.
  • Finally succeeded! However this indicates that RBS have not done what they said and have not removed the biometric recognition. I cannot see any other way to be able to use my card reader, so I suppose I will have to try another 50 times next time. Or better still, not need to move money out again, just put in enough to cover my RS and DDs.
  • Well done! Is your phone an android? I suspect the app is optimised for iphones!
