Homeserve Increase

Hi

Just on hold trying to cancel my Homeserve boiler and central heating cover - 10 minutes and counting and no queuing info.  They have increased it by 40% taking it to over £500 per year which is extraordinary given the profits for last year on their website.  Just wondered if people bothered with cover for an older boiler.  I'm hoping to get a local contractor and just save up for a new boiler as it will break at some point.

I know there's no loyalty with these companies but this has made me very angry....

Thanks

Shelly

At £500 a year you could buy a shiny new boiler every 2-3 years. Same with appliance insurance, by the time you've paid in for a couple of years you'll have paid out enough to replace it with a new one.

IMO you are much better off setting up a savings account as a repair fund and paying a regular amount into it, just like you do with Homeserve etc .

It's amazing how much money you can end up saving - especially if you get some interest on it as well (it also makes you realise just how money you are giving away to these companies) and not only will you still have the money but you'll have enough stashed away to replace stuff assuming that you dont dip into it.

  • Cancel the plan, try and sign up as a new customer you will then get a returning customer offer which will be cheaper or take our another one of their policies providing it meets your needs as a new customer.

e.g. we had a plumbing and drainage policy which was 75p a month. renewal was extortionate. cancelled and returning customer offer was £4 a month which was much cheaper. In the end went with plumbing drainage and electrics policy for £4 a month as a new customer as was same price as the returning customer policy on just plumbing and drainage

It is unusual for these types of service to cover oil or LPG (you dont say which it is).  Normally they only cover gas.   (you have posted in the oil, LPG and alternative fuels section).    what fuel do you have?

As an oil user, these covers are usually not available but I wouldnt have one with my boiler.  A local engineer has been out with ours on a Sunday, spent hours with it replacing a bunch of parts and been cheaper than the annul premiums.   Back in my gas boiler days, I did have boiler cover with British Gas.   But that was because it was a potterton boiler with known problems with its circuit board.  It would blow a circuit board each year (solder would be break as it hasnt heat protected).   The cost of the circuit board was higher than the premium.  So, it made sense.

Had an ignition module fail in the boiler, whilst diagnosing the problem the Plumber also noticed the pump was noisy. Bought a new pump for £40 off Ebay and a refurbished Ignition Module with 12 month warranty from the same for £35. Paid the Heating bloke 90 minutes labour to come back and fit them. The total cost of that was nowhere near £500.
