Funeral and burial

We registered my mother’s death online / via a phone call. The death certificates were posted out to us.

thank you all for responding.  Father is under End of Life care but as it’s the weekend the junior doctors are just keeping him comfortable.  Come Monday I suspect the consultant will bring this to an end as he is clearly ready to go.

Dad passed this morning which is not unexpected I guess.  I tried to call Co Op funeral team and they were not great. Central call centre didn’t really know anything much bar filling in their form and passing it to the relevant CO Op branch which I truly hope will be better.  They kept saying whilst you were waiting (either no answer or 30 minute wait) that their staff were ill due to Covid hence the wait.  

I also understand from a friend that I might not even need to travel all the way to hospital and they can do death certificate via email.  Does anyone know whether that is true? I am trying to avoid 6 hour round trips just to tick some government box.

I think this was under covid regulations. Register offices returned to face to face appointments at the end of March this year.

No reason to go to the hospital itself unless there are items you need to pick up.  A certificate wouldn't be issued there in any case.  We went to the registry office to get the certificate.  I would guess you can get a copy by email but the real one some institutions will require needs to be a paper copy from the registrar.  Many companies won't accept an email version as they will want to see the original or a certified copy.  It's because of this I ensured we got at least 2 copies from the registrar, one to keep and one to post if required.  If you need additional ones it's extra.  But you can get up to 3 copies certified at the post office for (I think) £11.

Sorry for your loss.  Even when expected it's still a shock.

I knew they would require face to face.  Worked as a supplier for government depts for over 20 years.  It’s exactly what they are like.

Who sends me the death certificate or do they send it to the register office of my choice.  I can contact my local register office  next week.   Bet they are on answerphone!

Sorry to see your news - it is tough even when expected. My understanding is that you can register it where you live and then they send the details to the registration district where the death occurred and then they will post the certs to you. 

Other thing worth taking up while you are with the registrar is the "tell us once" service which means assorted organisations can be immediately notified and saves you a fair bit of work, in mother's case this was Local Authority (council tax, bus pass, library card), HMRC,  DWP, NHS pensions, DVSA, passport agency and there might have been someone else but I can't remember.
