You might have had a final bill, but they have six years to correct any errors and send you a new final bill..
this is probably me not understanding back billing again but i thought if the bill was wrong they had a year to correct any mistakes (unless the mistake was caused by some gross action by the home owner like lying about the readings or whatever)

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.
  • There are a lot of circumstances that are not covered by back billing - it's actually quite specific and limited in what it covers.  The more general blanket six years is the statute of limitation on pursuing debt (I think, but I'm no expert on that side).

Hi, My mother passed away in March this year. I was executor of the will. I paid all bills and closed accounts etc. Sold her bungalow and exchanged 1 June'22. The electricity was paid and I have the full and final bill. 6 months later I have received a letter from LCS debt recovery stating I owe a further £65.98 and they acting on behalf of bulb. Every time I ring bulb they hang up on me. I have explained to LCS and sent all paperwork to both parties, death cert/ house exchange/ receipt of payment to bulb for final bill. What do I do ?
    Hi OP

    Sorry re your loss.

Does bulb have an on-line chat?

is this the nuber you are calling?

    Log all calls/etc,

I too have naoted on property we rent out that energy firms send in a few bills and often confuse the change over date and who pays

    Good luck

ps - speak - phone your MP and tell them what you are being put through

You still haven’t answered an important question: what date did you complete on the sale of your late mum’s property?

You say you have paid the fuel bill up to the date of exchange on 1 June, but you are responsible for bills up to the completion date.

Did you pay the final bill before or after selling the property? It sounds like it could be before from what you've said here, so just want to check before going any further.
No I paid the bill after exchange, the day we signed I took photos of the meters and sent them in, the final bill was prepared and I paid that
I would have thought to check if your final bill quoted the date and the readings on the photos you sent them, do they match ?

Yeah they said its a short payment 6 months after the final bill ?
So have they actually provided you with a new bill? And does it make sense or where does it go wrong? How does it differ from the original final bill? If they haven't provided a new final bill then they can't just ask for money.

How long between exchange and the actual move in date by the new owners? They have probably read the meters and given reads to the Energy supplier which were higher than yours and Bulb have taken their readings rather than yours and recalculated the final bill.

I'd certainly be complaining if they haven't sent a final bill and have simply passed the case to a debt collector in under 6 months.

Which would be correct - as it is the complete date rather than exchange where readings should be taken.
