My PN contract expires soon and they are increasing the bill from 20.60 to 36.80!! Don't want leave but don't want to pay this exorbitant increase. Apart from haggling ( which I do every renewal) and is getting harder, can you suggest any alternatives.I dont want to go to fibre just basic BB & line rental?

Well that's what you agreed to, you're just at the end of your deal. That's all it is, your discount is ending, not your contract.Phone them up and get a new one. Loook at the comparison sites and see what other providers are doing for the same service and bounce those off Plusnet. You may be surprised.0

I got my PN contract renewed recently for ~ £2.50 less than the previous price (and ~£23 less than the out of contract price) with one call to the retentions number.0

Also consider switching to another provider (even BT) going via Quidco or Topcashback to get cashback and a competitive new customer deal.
As an example, Topcashback currently offering £95 on BT new customer deals.0 -
Any offers showing on your online account?
If not, do your research on what they & others are offering elsewhere, phone them up & backed with those details do your annual haggling.

p.s. at some point in the next couple of years you will have to move to fibre of some sort as the traditional copper PSTN system is going away in 2025.0 -
