If I get a new phone on a 2 year contract, what happens at the end of the second year? Would I own the handset, and could I move to another provider on a sim only contract?

I haven't got it yet. It seems cheaper than buying a phone separately and having a sim only contract, which I find strange.

Not strange really, but don't forget to take two annual price rises into account, especially if you don't have  separate contracts for the phone and the airtime.

Nothing actually happens at the the end of two years. Unless you give notice (usually one month), your contract continues. It's a two year minimum term, not a two year contract.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

IIRC, no notice is needed if you use a PAC to transfer your number to another network.
And what happens, is you don't have to pay the early terminating fee if you do this.

Thanks, but it was more about whether I would own the phone at that point.

You own the phone from Day 1.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Some EE contracts, the phone remains the property of EE for six months.
