OTP issues

Nationwide also offer a card reader option, however I never use it. I have a Apple iPhone and MacBook, whenever I do the logon on the MacBook, via a browser the OTP value automatically appears in a bubble window and I only have to click on it to populate the OTP to the browser login.0

We tried this before. She's either ended up with a contract she's paying out for nothing. Or a PAYG that gets cancelled after a period of time due to lack of use. Also I feel that banks should be making sure all of their customers are looked after, not just expecting everyone to buy a mobile phone in order to access their own money.noh said:Having a mobile phone is the easiest way to solve this. It doesn't have to be a smart phone she doesn't need to use it for anything else just receiving SMS.
I'd love her to have, and use, a mobile as I'd feel happier about her safety if she had a phone on her, but it's not going to happen now.1 -
Thank you. This is the sort of advice I was hoping for! Seems you understand this pain first hand!Katiehound said:Halifax & Lloyds will send OTP over a landline
Nationwide allows you to use the card reader or OTP to log in
I have a mobile phone- not smart- and it nearly drove me mad trying to access the OTP as the message was so slow in coming (can't remember if that was for Santander or another bank)- because some web pages will log you out if the time lapse is too great with no activity.
Also it wouldn't be so bad if their OTP was 6 numbers (like my first direct is) as its so much easier to remember. But it's 8 random letters and numbers and very difficult to read and remember!0 -
I actually did this yesterday, but it is still a faff and still 30 secs is not really long enough as you need to refresh the email acc etc...grumbler said:
Teach her to have two windows opened side-by side.Beci said:...the problem is that it gives her 30 seconds in which to access her email, refresh it, hope that the OTP email arrives. Note down the 8 random letters and numbers and then go back to her login screen and type them in.Frankly this is near impossible for every the most tech savvy to manage!
Also I really don't think I'll get her to learn how to do this.0 -
We already set her up with a tablet. But tbh it's so unfamiliar to her that I'm not sure she'd manage it.Band7 said:Get her a smartphone, or a tablet so she can use the app. A tablet will be very similar to her PC but will make her banking much easier as she will rarely need the OTP.
If the tablet has a SIM, she can also receive the OTP via text msg, and she can transfer the OTP with one single click.

IIRC, Santander is the only one from many banks I have accounts with that disabled 'paste' OTPs in their online banking. I hate IT people doing these stupid things just for fun.eskbanker said:
Wouldn't the savvy thing be to copy/paste?Beci said:Note down the 8 random letters and numbers and then go back to her login screen and type them in.I know this because I use Phone Link on my PC and do copy&paste most OTPs sent by SMS.BTW, I can be wrong, but I don't think that they can send OTP by a e-mail - https://www.santander.co.uk/personal/support/fraud-and-security/one-time-passcodes
Exactly this. Can't copy and paste, which was what I'd hoped to try and teach her.grumbler said:

Also she is getting her OTP by email from santander, but it's too slow to refresh, view and enter into the log in field within 30secs.0 -

Also I really don't think I'll get her to learn how to do this.Do you know about Win + ← and Win + → (cursor keys)?I think for teaching this is a very easy way of doing this.

Is she using windows?
I've pinned outlook for email and my browser to the taskbar. When I'm using the browser, one click on the bottom brings up my email and another click takes me back to the browser (bank webpage)0 -
You don't have to pin them to do this - all windows that you open are accessible through the taskbar. The problem is to take their awkward alphanumeric code from one window to another and, when 'paste' is disabled, the easiest way is to have two windows opened side by side.Nebulous2 said:Is she using windows?
