I have had no relationship with Barclays until ten days ago when I opened a current account with them online with no problems at all. Received debit card in post after a couple of days followed by access code for online banking. PIN (which is needed to activate app) delayed by postal dispute so wandered into local branch (no appointment) where an efficient CS chap was able to source an access code to activate the app, and take a signature example from me saving cost of stamp.

The coffee was grim, I shall mark down my Trustpilot review accordingly.
I am also a new customer, but I have a question for you. Is your online banking site fully active?

My app is fine but I cannot set up payees or make payments online. The icons are just greyed out.
Think this has been answered by others but yes, I have full access AFAICT online. Logged in using PinSentry, set up a new payee and shifted a quid to check.

How long have you had access to the app? On the few occasions I have downloaded the app on to a new device, I have had a letter a few days later telling . me that certain features (it doesn't say exactly which features) will be unavailable for a period of time.
I have been using the app and online banking since 14th October. The app has been fully functional almost from the start but online banking has always been limited.

I have had a Barclays account for some years but stopped using it as the need for it stopped. I tried to use it as a 'switcher' but was unable to proceed as the debit card was out of date. Thought it would be easy to request of Barclays a new card. Big No. Despite me having opened in branch they insisted I had to go into branch again to confirm or reconfirm my identity. I have sent in a complaint but heard nothing for weeks. I need to chase it.

I would consider keeping it, and turning it into a Reward account as that would give you access to the 5% Rainy Day Saver.

Create a donor/burner account for switching at another bank, e.g. Metro or Monzo

The only two questions to verify my identity were to choose from a selection of dates of when I first moved into my home and to choose from a selection of numbers my last four digits of my current account number. This process was carried out by Experion I think so, as you suggest, I don’t think the process reached my credit score information. I selected the correct answers to the questions so I will never know why I was rejected, but, as you say, I will just have to like it or lump it. They might as well have just said “your application has failed so that is it. End of. Go away!

I was willing to take my passport to a branch but four months later is ridiculous. I could have risked going to a branch without an appointment but that is a two hour round journey for me.

I opened an account with another bank online the next day with no problem.

I agree that reading Trustpilot reviews is not a reliable way to choose a bank account. Customers that are unhappy are more likely to leave a review than happy customers. I probably would not have posted this topic if my application was successful.

I expect it will be much less than 0.05% of Barclays customer that leave a review anyway. Whether I am a typical applicant, or my application was typical I don’t know.

It's not that simple. You need to sign up to Blue Rewards and then jump through a few hoops or there is £5 sting in the tale if you make a mistake.

To answer the OPs question, they make most of their money in the non-consumer areas. Even in the consumer side of things, they are mostly after HNW (or at least) those who have multiple products with them; I personally don't think they'd care if they exited personal banking altogether.

I've had several issues with Barclays credit whereby I've been turned down for a plan at the Apple Store and also a "why not pay over 3 months" option at Amazon (which I'd done successfully via their previous provider).
As a result, I just don't bother if the credit supplier is Barclays; they don't seem to care that they're losing their customers business.

I've been told by Barclays that for them to give me my first chequebook with them I have to visit branch. This is not ideal, but possible. Unfortunately, they insist an appointment is necessary and this entails a long delay (late Jan 2023 is what I've been offered so far)!

In late September I booked an appointment to open a Barclays student additions account. The appointment took place on 7th November, I opened the account alright, was able to order a chequebook . On 25th November they shut my account plus the rainy day saver I had with them without warning, I went into branch and after half an hour they told me to come back next week. On 26th November my personalised debit card arrived and on 28th I had to go into branch with proof of ID plus proof of entitlement to the funds in the accounts (£5k in total). They initially said that I would have to take the money in cash but after half an hour finally managed to do a faster payment. I have since made a complaint. What a faff.
  • I was asked to make a branch appointment when I first applied, tried to book one and there was nothing bookable locally for several months so decided to just leave it. Applied again a few weeks ago and it just went through. I swear there was no different details provided - I never have issues being electronically verified usually. No idea why you couldn't just pop into branch to have ID checked, sounds like a 2 minute job, not something that needs an appointment.
