Coinbase have taken £1,000 from my partner's bank account (she doesn't have a coinbase account).

  • I've heard quite a few cases of people being scammed from Santander and them not doing anything about it, including on TV documentaries, online etc. I've even been a victim of a small mistake quite a few years ago, which wasn't a scam but a miscommunication between O2 and Santander. A direct debit had been cancelled by us and for some reason, Santander still sent the funds to O2. Luckily O2 we're happy to refund it but the attitude from Santander was horrible and put me off using them for many years. Anyway, it's not really similar to your issue but thought I'd just mention it.

If your partner hasn't made the transactions themselves, then it will be classed as fraud. Sadly, there's not really much you could use to prove that it wasn't your partner who made the transactions.

This case would be classified as fraud, and Santander should ideally refund you seeing as it wasn't your fault unless they see something suspicious. As long as you contacted Santander and reported it as soon as you saw it, they should refund you.

I'd make a formal complaint with Santander and if necessary, report them to the ombudsman. I sometimes question the service you receive from the ombudsman too, but it's worth a try.
  • I've already had a reply from the ombudsman saying theyagree with santander. Not sure if I can do anything else.  :(

Is it the actual ombudsman or the case worker/officer you get first?

It was the actual ombudsman at the end. They're saying it doesn't matter if we disagree, that's that, end of the road.

That isn't true. You can take Santander to court. A case like this would be heard on the small claims track and the process is designed to be used without a requirement to pay for legal advice.
  • Thank you @masonic. I am going to suggest she does this-I guess I can try to find a solicitor who deals with such matters don't know where to start...
