Is there anyway I can check if my landlord is declaring his rental income to HMRC? I believe he has a number of properties and I have an inkling that he is not totally legit.

is it through a limited company? if so the accounts will be on companies house but not individual transactions.

if he isn't - thats his problem anyway, if he gets caught.

    why are you interested?

You can report suspected tax fraud to HMRC online - https://www.gov.uk/report-tax-fraud

What level of evidence they need to do anything I don't know - I imagine they get a lot of wronged/angry people claiming 'Joe Bloggs is fiddling his taxes'

No, you can't. Tax returns are not public property in the UK.

Not sure if this completely relevant to the Pets & pet care board!

I will try how to get it moved to somewhere better suited

  • Report possible tax fraud. It's IMHO a citizen's duty.

    Many landlords tax fiddle, tragically.

    Artful (landlord since 2000).

It depends.  If you have some evidence of it, by all means report it.  If you just think "he's a bit dodgy and I bet he isn't", don't.

Unless the landlord is living abroad, in which case my (inexpert) understanding is that the tenant / ;etting agent needs to withhold some of the rent to pass directly to HMRC ?

I would hope that HMRC don't waste limited resources on investigating someone on the basis of "an inkling", evidence is what you need to provide and it doesn't sound to me as if you really have any.

HMRC have extensive information feeds, including reports of fraud.  And the AI algorithms will be continually evolving.  And they won't tell you (or me, or anyone else...) the details of what they follow up or their current detailed decision processes.

If, for example, they already have warning flags raised over some dodgy punters, I suspect people reporting of fraud might well prompt further investigation.

I know from personal experience reporting dodgy dealings can and has resulted in investigation. (Me reporting someone with "unexpected" extra income.)

It's surely our citizen duty to inform authorities if we think something's wrong.  (Hopefully) most would do so for obvious theft, murder, other crimes, abuse.  The country needs this tax revenues, help HMRC find them!

I really must do my SA tax return soon! (Or fines etc, quite right too)
